Today's Everyday Fashion: The White Blazer

Inspiration: Fashion Love Affair via BlueFly Email

So simple and yet so cute together: a white blazer, black top and dark denim. As much as I love tons and tons of visual interest in an outfit, I'm often in the mood for and can appreciate a clean palette as well. (Not to mention adding some layered necklaces helps spice it up a little!) Today's inspiration is rocking this look - I especially like her jeans. I would also pair this idea with black flats and a panama hat, or black pants for work!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Pleated Skirt

Inspiration: K is for Kani via Google search

I found the idea for today's outfit while searching for images of potential cities to visit on our upcoming trip to Europe. Instead of a pleated red skirt, I thought why not pair a red top I already own with a pleated skirt in another color, and add a fun purse? The result is so festive, and one of my favorite outfits, ever. And while I won't be wearing it on our trip, I'll certainly be finding a use for it here at home!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Summer Vibes

Anyone else seriously craving the beach lately?! Summer can't get here fast enough, and finding this cute dress recently is not helping my patience! It's an off-shoulder, tie-sleeve striped number with a beach-y, preppy vibe. Paired with a big sun hat and wedges it's easy, breezy and so perfect for a lunch date or errands. What styles are on your summer wish list?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Time Saving Tip

Inspiration: Splash News via WhoWhatWear

If you're like me, trips to the mall are few and far between, and a bit rushed once you get there. To stay organized, I like to keep a running to-do list on my calendar. I'll add things I need to return or items to shop for in the notes section so I can be in and out in as little time as possible. On my last trip, I had written "Express sunglasses" on the list. I spotted this pair online a couple months ago, and wrote a reminder to check them out in person. It worked like a charm, because they were super cute and took no time to cross them off my list. And they are the perfect addition to today's Olivia Palermo look for less, which I would gladly wear on repeat if the Florida weather allowed it!!

CeCe at Macy's

As a little girl, I loved playing dress up. I had a trunk full of hand me down dresses and accessories and I would twirl around the house in them. I don’t think I will ever tire of playing dress up because what a joy it was to try out two looks from CeCe at Macy’s for today’s post! This is my first experience with this line, but a quick scan shows that it’s feminine and polished – you’ll find lots of floral prints, bows, ruffles, and shades of pink. In other words: it’s totally my style! And the price points are reasonable, too.

In today’s post I’m wearing a cape dress in a beautiful poppy floral print (this print also comes as a maxi dress and several tops and skirts), as well as a white ruffle blouse with a black floral skirt. The sizing runs slightly small, so if you’re in between sizes I’d recommend sizing up. And if you’ve got feminine, fun clothes for work or weekend on your shopping list, then definitely give CeCe at Macy’s a try!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The New Silhouette

Inspiration: Pinterest

For what seems like forever now, long tunic tops worn over skinny jeans or leggings has been the norm. A new silhouette is in town, though: high waist denim with shirts tucked in or cropped. I am cautiously optimistic about this shape. I don't have the body type to pull it off quite as well as my inspiration (it looks great on curves), but I'm rocking it regardless (also here). I don't know that it will ever be as popular of a silhouette as its predecessor, but I'm having fun switching things up. Will you be trying it in your closet?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Sailor Pants

Inspiration: J.Crew

Sailor pants. All the rage right now according to J.Crew. I used a pair from last year to create a similar look as the catalog photo. Both outfits have a similar adventurous feel to them - perhaps because we both look like we’re about to board a yacht, or that we’re tourists in a fabulous city. Even if your day is way less exciting, why not to have a sense of adventure in your outfit? Be a tourist in your own city. (Yacht optional.) Sailor pants may be just the thing to help you achieve it!

I’m so excited to share an amazing resource for special occasions with you today: the LC Lauren Conrad Dress Up Shop at Kohl’s! I can’t believe I didn’t know about this for the two weddings we attended recently, but thankfully we have a couple more events coming up (baby shower, fundraiser, wedding) that these gorgeous, affordable styles are perfect for!

It’s everything you would expect from a line by Lauren Conrad at Kohl’s – feminine, elegant, and affordable. I especially love that this line offers separates (coordinating tops and skirts of varying lengths and pants) so you can customize a look that’s perfect for you. And LC Lauren Conrad has plenty of shoes, purses, and accessories to finish the look, too.

Here are two Kohl’s coupon codes to ensure you get the best deal. (Note: some restrictions may apply.)

Use code TRENDY10 for $10 off $75 Women's Apparel, Jewelry, Accessories, Beauty, and Shoes. 3/17-3/26. Use code FF20OFF for 20% off. 3/29-4/02.

After referencing LC Lauren Conrad size charts, I went up one size on the maxi dress and jumpsuit, and they both fit perfectly. The pleated skirt runs big, so size down 1-2 sizes if you can.

Which LC Lauren Conrad look is your favorite?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Pom Poms for Work

Inspiration: fashionably lo via a banana Republic Email

The pom pom/tassels trend is everywhere lately, which got me thinking... how could you get more use from those trendy pieces and wear them at work? My outfit idea is all about the purse. Since you don't generally carry a purse around at work, a clutch or crossbody is an easy way to spice up an outfit at lunch, during your commute or for after-hours socializing. Little touches like fringe earrings and a colorful bracelet tie the look together but are still totally doable in a business casual look. This is one way I'd wear this trend - how would you make it work for work?

When you're feeling all fancy because of your sweet new (affordable) threads - that's me in today's post with JCPenney. They have so many cute styles for spring!

Let's talk about this black jumpsuit first, because I can’t get over how wearing something that feels like pajamas can look this polished! I styled it to wear casually, but you could easily dress it up with heels for a special occasion, too. My hat and necklaces are also from JCPenney.

My second favorite look is the pink dress and bright blue earrings. This color combo is next level. And the fit on the dress is perfect. Last but not least, a yellow stripe dress paired with a rainbow purse and orange earrings, below. This dress is great quality and yellow pairs so well with any bright color. (I went with orange but any shade of pink, blue or green works too.)

JCPenney already has great prices, plus right now take an extra 30% off (select apparel, shoes, accessories, fine and fashion jewelry, salon products, home, furniture, mattresses, blinds and shades) when you use a JCP credit card, or take 25% off with any other method of payment with code 8FORYOU. (Between March 23-26, 2017, restrictions may apply.)

Book Cover Reveal and Pre-Order!

Someone pinch me - is this real?! How did the past year go by so fast?! Because approximately 55 weeks ago a publisher got in touch and suggested I write a book on the topic of fashion and faith, a topic that both meant the world to me but also felt incredibly scary and off-limits. I hesitated at first and then jumped in with both feet, spending days on end at my computer in pajamas: writing, praying, researching, and interviewing women and listening to their stories. I laughed, I cried, I learned a ton, and I healed many old wounds on this important topic. Important because the longing to decorate ourselves and our surroundings and our deepest questions about beauty are a precious part of a woman's soul, and yet these topics often feel off-limits within the context of our faith, personal values, and/or global responsibility. I'm busting the doors open on these topics! I can't wait to share this book with you!

J's Everyday Fashion and Faith: Personal Style with Purpose (Waterfall Press) is available for pre-order on Amazon now! And the official launch date is October 3, 2017 (aka, when you'll be able to read it).

How can you support this project? Thanks so much for asking!! (wink wink)

1.    Preorder a copy so that you can be one of the first to read it and leave an Amazon review! One of the easiest but most impactful ways you can help.

2.     Organize a book club with the book! We will be providing exclusive resources to anyone who organizes a group within the first few months – including free study guides and the opportunity for a group Skype session with me. Simply sign up for our new email list that is for book announcements only. If you sign up now, you will receive the study guide as soon as it becomes available. We don't plan to send more than a handful of book-specific emails over the next year, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

3.     Plan an event or book signing in your hometown! Or simply tell us what church or organization you think would be a good fit for an in-person book event and we will take it from there. Email us your ideas at j@jseverydayfashion.us.

4.    Join our Facebook group! Some book announcements will be posted there, but this community is really for anyone interested in going deeper on the topic of fashion and faith in a semi-private setting. I've posted a handful of things already so you can get a feel for what kind of content I will be sharing, and of course you are welcome to start your own discussions or pose questions as well.

I cannot wait to see the beautiful stories and dialogue that comes from this project! If you are interested in exploring the topic of fashion and faith, I hope you'll join me in one or more ways listed above.

[Tomorrow we will be back to outfit posts as usual!]

Today's Everyday Fashion: Old Favorites

I post so many outfits here - some experiments, some fails, some favorites - so it's interesting to look back and see what things "stick" and become most loved and worn repeatedly. This outfit was the clear winner for winter 2016. Originally published on January 6th, I wore it so many times last year that it was like slipping into an old uniform when I wore it again a couple weeks ago. Sometimes we (me included!) put so much pressure on ourselves to always be wearing something fresh and new, but today I'm taking a moment to enjoy the old, and a favorite from last year that's still just as much of a favorite this year!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Two Types of Fashion

Today's outfit features one very trendy shirt (styled for winter last week, and for summer today!), as well as some very on-trend sandals and accessories. What does "trendy" really mean though? To answer that question I think we have to define the two different types of fashion  - the fashion industry, and the fashion in our everyday lives. The fashion industry decides what's "in style" by putting it on the runway, in magazines and in retail stores. Our everyday fashion is what we really wear in real life. We are somewhat affected by the fashion industry because they determine what's in stores, but I also think the "rules" they come up with do not need to apply to us! I like seeing what creative new things the fashion industry puts out, but I also don't think there should be any pressure to wear it or "keep up." Wear it because you like it, and it speaks to your creative heart. Ruffles and bright colors have always been a favorite so these particular trends are really speaking to me and I can't wait to wear them this summer. Whether or not they make their way into your everyday fashion is totally up to you!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Ladylike Style

Inspiration: Harper's Bazaar

Reese Witherspoon pretty much sets the standard when it comes to ladylike style. And her look today is one of the best (and easiest) recipes for it! Simply pair a boucle or tweed jacket with a bow or collared blouse and you've nailed it. Jeans and pointy toe pumps are optional, and a structured purse finishes the look. My version is an outfit I've worn several times over the last year. This type of ladylike style never seems to get old - or go out of style!

Today's Everyday Fashion: In Real Life

As a teenager reading fashion magazines, I wanted so badly to be able to create the type of organized chaos you often see in those pages. The outfits often included tons and tons of details and accessories piled on and yet there's this harmonious balance to them, too - much like you see in today's inspiration photo. I started using those ideas in my own closet (which eventually became a blog!) and while my versions almost always wind up being more toned down, they have their origins in that type of magazine styling. It's my version of animal print, mustard and icy blue that works in real life!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Look for Less

Inspiration: Getty Alex Huckle via popsugar

Today's look is all about getting the look for less! I've been loving these one shoulder asymmetrical ruffle tops I've been seeing lately, but not the $300 price tag they usually come with. I found this one for $50, and with a coupon it came to only $35. I love that it has long sleeves, so it works in today's winter look, but can also work for spring with white jeans and colorful accessories. This jacket is another recent score. I had it saved to my "favorites" and noticed it was on sale for $99 (original price $399!). I snapped up the last one. My outfit wasn't inspired by Olivia Palermo's per se, but buying this jacket was. I have so many fun ideas for it. Check out some similar options below!

Today's Everyday Fashion: 3 Recent Articles

Give me all the yellow, all the time. (No, really.) Definitely one of my favorite colors to wear, so I was excited to find this top and pants recently. I instantly wanted to wear them together, and in person they did not disappoint (although I expected the top to be matte; its actually a shiny finish). The two yellows match perfectly, and with heels and a blazer this outfit would be perfect for work. Or wear it with a denim jacket and sandals as shown on the weekend!

My Clothing Budget Update - Past 6 Months

1. Leopard coat, $80
2. Stripe dress, $23
3. Jumpsuit, $20
4. Halter sweater, $12
5. High-waist jeans, $40
6. Leopard top, $15
7. White ruffle top, $43
8. Bomber jacket, $25
9. Ramones tee, $20
10. Pink stripe skirt, $22
11. Dress, $94
12. Jumpsuit, $40
13. Dress, $76
14. Dress, $20
Total = $530

This is everything I purchased with my clothing budget since my last update on August 2nd! I haven't been posting about my budget as frequently, however, I've definitely still been keeping up with it. I find that having a budget is the most helpful tool in making purchasing decisions! It encourages me to plan ahead and consider the big picture. And knowing that I've earmarked money to be spent on clothes gives me the peace to pursue creative expression through fashion, because I feel confident I'm staying well within my overall finances and personal values. (Also see: "How to Set a Clothing Budget.")

These recaps are also an essential part of the process for me - because it's a way to reflect on what I I bought and to find ways to make improvements. Lately I've been making a concerted effort to buy a much smaller number of items overall, and to make thoughtful purchases that I will want to wear for many years to come. Doing the math on this recap, approx. 40% of my budget was used for a small number of big purchases (like the leather jacket, handbag and several special occasion dresses). There's plenty of room for improvement, too. Like the purchases that didn't turn out as well as I had hoped and haven't worn much or at all: #6-7 above, #8 and 12 below, and #2, 7 and 11 at the end.

1. Leather jacket, $150
2. Stripe top, $25
3. Turtleneck, $36
4. Plaid skirt, $40
5. Sequin dress, $67
6. Red coat, $58
7. Plaid dress, $40
8. Maxi dress, $20
9. Red sweater, $29
10. Sequin skirt, $38
11. Black purse, $288
12. Lace trim top, $21
13. Black belt, $15
Total = $827

1. Dress, $110
2. Dress, $52
3. Swim coverup, $30
4. Cape blazer, $35
5. Dress pants, $42
6. Vest, $29
7. Bodysuit, $25
8. Tee, $19
9. Jeans, $79
10. Denim jacket, $51
11. Sweater, $34
12. Red flats, $49
Total = $555

Overall, I averaged 6.5 items and $318 per month. That's slightly over my $250 monthly clothing budget, but I had 4-5 months of budget saved up and still have a positive balance of $1035. (I treat my budget like an allowance and at the start of each month I deposit $250 into an "account" and then spend as I go.)

Also - important to note that these budget posts only include things that I purchased myself, that fall into the "clothing" category of my budget, and do not include:
- Stella & Dot items. I'm a 1099 employee and earn products and discounts.
- Items that were returned.
- Any free items I get from working in the fashion industry. (Although I do return items from sponsors whenever possible - see Disclosure for more info - I also wind up keeping some for personal use.)
- Several athleisure items I received as Christmas gifts this year.

Have you ever set a clothing budget? What are your current clothing budget goals?

My two goals for next time are to keep buying fewer items, and to have an even fewer "regret" purchases!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Graphic Tee, 3 Ways

Original Blog post One, Two

Without a doubt, this graphic tee has become one of the most-repeated items in my closet. This is the third time I've posted an outfit with it, and while each look is similar they also couldn't be more different. (Proof that all you need is a little creativity to make something old in your closet feel new again!) I was inspired in today's post to dress it up with high-waist jeans and heels for a look I'd love to wear for dinner with friends. Which one of the three looks so far is your favorite?

Approx. dates: Shoes are 3 years ago. Jacket, tee, belt, purse and jeans are within last 6 months.

Also - the black version of this romper is only $20 right now!! We're not talking a cheap romper that's low quality and going to fall apart though. I paid $72 for mine (one still in stock here), and it's SO soft and great quality in person. I may have to order the black, too - it's such a steal!

Color makes me so happy! It never ceases to amaze me the way our clothing can affect our mood in a positive way. There's something about bright colors that puts a little extra pep in my step. I've worn this skirt with cobalt blue before, but the yellow coat takes it to a whole new level!!
