Putting Fear In Its Place

In honor of International Women’s Day today I wanted to share something a bit deeper than my usual outfit posts. I want to talk about fear. I’m living with a lot of it lately, because writing a book was terrifying. It was also joyful, exciting, and an incredibly healing experience – it was and will continue to be more of a positive experience than it will ever be negative. But for the sake of this post today, let’s focus on the fear because I want to call it out and put it in its place.

You’ve probably heard someone say that writing a book is scary before. Other things in life can be too – like applying for school, accepting a new job, going out on a relationship limb, or having a baby. All of these things make you all sorts of vulnerable, and many people experience fears like the Impostor syndrome or fear of rejection when it comes to writing a book.

I have one very specific fear though. The overall topic of my book is how I’ve never felt completely comfortable with both fashion and faith in the same room (and through research, interviews, and personal stories I explore how we can find a balance between the two). So basically being asked to write a book about this topic was like “Hey I’m uncomfortable, so why not literally draw a bunch of attention to it?” Ugh.

When I really drill down to WHY that terrifies me though, I find that it’s not about justifying fashion to God. It’s not sharing my faith publicly or with people in general. What I’m scared of is writing a book in the “Christian” category, which in a way means I'm entering that world with my career. [Note: the content here on J's Everyday Fashion is not changing, this is just a new, separate venture for me personally and professionally.] I’m terrified of being rejected by that new-to-me world; of being labeled a heretic. Or what if they accept me with open arms, I’m put in the spotlight, and then I disappoint people with my humanness? Everything about it is scary.

But here’s what I realized:

1.     The fear may be a lie. It’s possible that the entire thing is just in my head. Because that’s how fear works. It builds up a lie so deep, you’re sure that death is on the other side of the door, when that’s actually where you need to go. I’m open to believing that it's all completely unfounded. Let’s find out.

2.     Delight in hardships. It’s not just a Bible verse (2 Corinthians 12:10), it’s real life. An iron is refined in the fire. I’d rather take a potentially scary situation head-on than stay in my comfort zone. Just think of all the lessons to be learned and character to be built if it does wind up being a challenging situation? I can't get those "benefits" if I stay put.

3.     Embrace being an outsider. The rejection my blog has occasionally received from the fashion industry is a good thing because it means I'm staying true to and honoring my faith and personal beliefs. So why couldn’t the same be true in this scenario? I may never belong in either world completely, but what if that’s actually exactly where I need to be?

4.     It’s not about me. The message of this book is so much greater than me and my ego, I can already sense that. Surely it contains my story and my voice, but I just don’t see any of it being about me, I feel very unattached to it in that way. That gives me a lot of strength, because when I feel fear, I’m tuned in that I’m making it about me in that moment, and I know to cut it out right away!

5.     This is the definition of faith. In life, sometimes we are asked to do outrageous things (Abraham and Isaac, David and Goliath). Stepping into this new category feels like one of the most outrageous and terrifying things I could possibly do! But it also feels exactly like where I’m supposed to go. This is the definition of faith, and I’m committed to living my life walking in it.

Perhaps my fears sound pretty silly. (Sometimes people have fears that I don’t fully understand, either.) Or perhaps it makes no sense why I would be scared of something and doing it anyway. Maybe someday one of my fears will come to fruition and I'll share that I'm upset, and you'll wonder, "Well why did you do that to yourself in the first place?!" But there's a much bigger picture to consider, and ultimately the things fear tries to get me to worry about, are none of my business. So when I feel fear – for a brief moment or it may try to dominate my entire day – I will say to myself, “Choose faith. Choose to step past your ego. Choose to seek the kingdom first. Choose to be brave. And no matter what, don’t stop moving forward.”

[I also enjoy listening to this beautiful song during less-brave moments.]

Have you ever been afraid to take on a new challenge? How did you work through the fear?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Perfect Dress

The lavender color, large print floral and short sleeves on this dress were too pretty to pass up. (It was part of the same online order for yesterday's blush pink dress.) I needed this size to fit my hips, but then there was a ton of excess fabric around my stomach and lower back. My tailor added several darts to the front and back, just under the seam. (This dress also has pockets, which are still just as useable, thankfully.) I haven't worn it yet, but plan to for a speaking engagement or another daytime event. Nude pumps or sandals could also dress it down for a shower. I'm always a little nervous when I get something altered, but I'm so happy with how it turned out. Sometimes putting in a little extra effort means you wind up with your perfect dress!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Wedding Guest

We attended another wedding this weekend and snapped these photos on our way there!  I fell in love with this dress when I featured it in this post, and couldn't resist the pale pink color and super full skirt. I'm a huge fan of this dress brand (I believe this is my 4th Chi Chi London dress), so I gathered some more options below. I wish I had an occasion for every single one of them, because they are just too fun!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Leopard Top

Inspiration: Harper's Bazaar

When I posted recently about whether or not a leopard coat is practical, I love how many of you guys said leopard is a neutral! Indeed, leopard no longer feels like a "trend," but a staple that's not going anywhere soon. I especially like the colors and larger scale print of this particular top, and it looks great with white skirt inspired by the magazine image. I have some reservations about the material - I ordered it online and in person it wrinkles quickly and may not hold up well to washing - but it certainly is a great pattern. I shared some other great leopard options available in different materials, below!

What to Wear to NASCAR

Growing up in Kansas, I always liked going to demolition derbies as a kid. Other than that, though? I've never been much of a race fan. All that changed after spending one epic day at the Daytona International Speedway last week though, because I'm hooked! It was SO much fun!! Of course, it doesn't hurt that we were hosted by Toyota Racing, and got to do some cool behind-the-scenes stuff like hang out with drivers Matt Tifft, Christopher Bell, Noah Gragson, Myatt Snider, and Kyle Busch's wife, Samantha. This being my first time at NASCAR, I wasn't sure what to expect and I had no idea what to wear. After my online search left me with lots of questions, I decided to take notes and put together a style guide based on what I saw. Check out my tips below, and please let me know if I missed anything!

Jacket: Wilson's Leather, $150
Top: TJ Maxx, $12 (similarsimilar)
Jeans: American Eagle, $40
Shoes: Stitch Fix c/o (similar)
Earrings: My Stella & Dot
Purse: JCPenney c/o, $29 (similarsimilar)
Approx. dates: Purse is 1 year ago. Jacket is 6 months ago. Sweater and shoes are recent. Jeans are new.

1. Wear sunscreen.
I can't believe I forgot to slather myself in SPF before I left the house, and I regretted it all day. If you're only attending the race at night you obviously won't need sunscreen, but if you're spending the day in the infield, you'll definitely want sun protection here in sunny Florida!

2. Comfy shoes.
We saw people parking really far away from the Speedway and walking over, plus you'll be on your feet all day in the infield. It also can't hurt to pack some band-aids in case your super comfy shoes wind up rubbing like mine did!

3. Pants and close-toe shoes.
If you're hanging out in the garage and on pit road (the equivalent of "backstage"), there is no required dress code. However, we were told that long pants and close-toed shoes (I packed some in JJ's backpack) are recommended because of vehicle movement and live pit stops on pit road.

4. Skip the skirts and dresses, mostly.
The one tip I saw repeatedly online was not to wear a skirt or dress. If you're climbing stairs in the stands, you may wind up flashing the people below. This rule also makes sense with the strong breezes you'll likely encounter from being outside. I did see one chambray dress with biker shorts underneath, so dresses and skirts are definitely not off-limits, just proceed with caution.

5. It's hot, and then it's not.
Check the weather before you go, but the temps we experienced in February were scorching during the day, and then I was freezing (even with my leather jacket!) after the sun went down. Layers will help you cover both bases.

6. Accessorize smartly.
Consider wearing a hat to help shade your eyes. Definitely bring sunglasses. And strategize how to carry your belongings. I didn't have much (snacks, phone, makeup) so I went with a small cross body. JJ brought his camera gear and equipment in a backpack.

7. Picture other sporting events.
When we arrived I quickly realized that getting dressed for NASCAR isn't that different from other sporting events! Many women were dressed very casually, with sneakers and sports gear, like you would see at a football game. I felt like I needed to be more stylish at NASCAR for some reason, but the only women I saw in heels and cute tops were arriving at night solely for the race. Really anything goes on race day, so I'd recommend whatever makes you most comfortable. I felt really happy with this outfit, but in the future other style ideas I'd consider are sneakers, a baseball hat, graphic tees, plaid or chambray.

What are your best style tips for NASCAR? Please share!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Fashion Sneakers

Inspiration: Bloomingdale's

Can we all just take a moment to celebrate that sneakers are so in style right now? Not necessarily because that gives us "permission" to wear them (I say wear them regardless, if that's what you like), but because it means there are so many cute options to choose from! (Seriously, how cute are some of the pairs I found below?!) This whole sneaker trend is also making it easier to pack for our trip to Europe. I'm planning on bringing this pair of black Nikes so they can double as both work out shoes and sightseeing shoes, in outfits like the one pictured in todays post. They are as cute as they are comfy, and that's a definite style win in my book.

Jacket: H&M, $25 (similar, similar)
Tee: American Eagle, $20

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Wedding Jumpsuit

Replacing the usual outfit photos today with some snapshots from a friend's wedding this weekend. I wanted to share my outfit quickly because it was a hit (so comfy to dance in, and I got so many compliments!) but it's on sale and low in stock. I went back and forth on whether or not it was dressy enough for a wedding - with some casual sandals I'd wear this jumpsuit to dinner any night of the week - but with the silver shoes and earrings it felt perfect. My only complaint? Even with the straps up as high as they would go, I occasionally caught my bra sneaking out, like in the 3rd photo above. I'm no stranger to not "filling out" the tops of dresses, and normally I would just safety pin it, but couldn't since it's a jumpsuit and I needed to be able to pull it down for restroom breaks. (If you have other ideas for overcoming that snafu, I'd love to hear!) Even still, I give this outfit five stars. It was such a fun night!

Jumpsuit: ASOS, $40 (also comes in red)
Earrings: My Stella & Dot
Shoes: Wet Seal c/o, $9 (similar, similar)
Approx. dates: Shoes are 4 years ago. Earrings are recent. Jumpsuit is new.

Today's Everyday Fashion: Recent Awards

You guys... this dress is so much fun! I never would've tried it on in the store, but now it's one of my favorite things in my closet. It came to me by way of a recent Stitch Fix partnership on Pinterest. The style lesson here: challenge yourself to try things on you wouldn't normally try! I have to remind myself of this often, because it really is true. Those "just outside the box" purchases usually wind up being my favorite.

Dress: Stitch Fix c/o (same, same, same)
Boots: Stitch Fix c/o (same, same)
Hat: boutique c/o, $7 (similar)
Purse: JCPenney c/o, $29 (similarsimilar)

Also - I'm excited to share that JJ won an award for his photography! A few months ago he was asked to submit a photo for the Melrose Center Awards (Orlando's main library). He entered this image of a longhorn in Lake Nona and won his category (photography) as well as the grand prize!! I'm so proud!! He made me promise to share my own recent award if I posted about his, so I'm also happy to share that I won the "Best Everyday Style" category in the first annual ShopStyle Awards. Words can't describe how thankful we are to be a part of creative pursuits we enjoy, and to have your love and support! xoxo

Today's Everyday Fashion: 6 Books I've Read So Far

Inspiration: Keaton Row

Some outfits are like classic recipes. You may rework them a little over the years, but you keep coming back again and again. Today's look reminds me of this similar look from 2014 as well as this outfit in 2016. Sometimes a casual look with a preppy wool blazer and gingham print hits the spot!

Blazer: J.Crew Factory, $83 (similar, similar, similar)
Top: Gap, $30 (similar, similar)
Jeans: Express, $37 (similarsimilar)
Belt: Limited, $15 (similarsimilar)
Shoes:  J.Crew Factory, $48 (similar, similarsimilar)

Approx. dates: Blazer is 3 years ago. Top, belt, jeans and shoes are 2 years ago. Purse is 1.5 years ago.

Also, last month I shared my "resolution" for 2017: to read lots of books! Here are six I've read so far, in the order I read them. All six were great and I would recommend all of them. I've got another ten or so on our bookshelf that I can't wait to dive into, and a long wish list on Amazon once I exhaust that pile. Have you read any of these books? What books would you recommend?

1. Moving Mountains by John Eldredge - If you've ever wondered why we pray, how to pray or why some prayers get answered and others don't, then this is the book for you. John Eldredge is one of my favorite authors, and this book is a great resource for some very tough questions!

2. Captivating by John & Stasi Eldredge - I decided to re-read this favorite after I finished writing my book. And while I didn't love it as much as I remembered, I would still recommend it. It contains some wonderful wisdom about women's issues and the captivating nature of a woman's heart.

3. So You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson - This book reads like an exciting detective's case that dives into how we shame people on social media, with tons of interviews with victims. It does not really explore how to solve the problems it presents, but the first-person accounts were gripping and valuable.

4. The Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell - I read this "classic" on recommendation from my husband. It reads like a straightforward research journal (a bit dry), but the studies and info it contains about how concepts reach their tipping point (or "go viral") is so good, I'd definitely recommend it.

5. Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert - Completely obsessed with this book! One of my favorite books is War of Art by Steven Pressfield, and this felt like Gilbert's take on the same subject. If you're in a creative job or have an art that you love (writing, painting, fashion, etc.), it's a must-read!

6. 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman - A quick, easy read about how to identify your own love language, as well as love those around you better. I've been familiar with the concept for years, but it was great to dig in deeper, and to read this book together as a couple. There's always room for improvement!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Lace Up Romper

I wish you could feel how soft this romper is -  like one of those kids books that have textures on the pages. Because not only is this adult onesie adorable with the stripes, lace up top and oversized sleeves, it also feels amazing on. It's comfortable and wrinkle-free, and it makes me feel like a million bucks, which I think is probably the best thing a romper can do. I can't wait to bust it out this spring!

Romper: Lucca Couture c/o Amazon, $72 (also in black here
Bralette: Kohl's, $15
Shoes: Steve Madden c/o Amazon, $65
Purse: Rebecca Minkoff c/o Stein Mart, $149
Necklaces: My Stella & Dot OneTwo
Sunglasses: Francesca's, $12 (similar, similar, similar)
Approx. dates: Bralette is 2 years ago. Shoes are 6 months ago. Purse is recent. Romper is new.

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Leopard Coat

Inspiration: Bloomingdale's

If I lived in a colder climate, a leopard coat would be a no-brainer for my closet. But as a Floridian, the occasions to wear one are few and far between! There will be the occasional nights when temperatures dip low enough, and there may be opportunities to wear one while traveling. For example, I've thought about bringing one to Europe for the northern leg of our trip, to wear with flats as pictured. I'm sure some would recommend sticking to basic colors if you don't have much use for coats, but "go big or go home" and the idea that you might as well wear a fun coat the few times you need one, also makes sense to me, too. Which type of coat would you choose?

Coat: H&M, $80 (similar below)
Sweater: J.Crew Factory, $36 (similar below)
Jeans: Stich Fix c/o
Heels: Saks OFF 5th c/o, $70 (similarsimilar)
Flats: Zara, $50 (similar below)
Purse: Marc Jacobs/Saks Off 5th, $288 (similarsimilar)
Earrings: My Stella & Dot

Today's Everyday Fashion: Why I'm Confident

Sometimes while I'm getting ready in the morning I like to sing and dance to praise and worship. The other day I said to my husband, "I'm sure you've heard me singing (sarcasm because our neighbors can probably hear it). I just want you to know that I don't have any misguided plans to audition for The Voice or anything. I know my voice is pretty terrible, but it just feels so good to sing, and it makes me happy, so I do it!"

It occurred to me later that my confidence with fashion comes from the exact same place. You won't hear me say that I think I'm stylish, or that I'm a wonderful dresser, and I often post outfits here that I'm unsure about or questioning and yet... I would also say that I am completely confident when it comes to style! (Certainly you've got to have some confidence to be posting outfits online, and potentially even more so when you're not sure about them.) I don't give much thought to my ability or style skills. But I'm 100% confident in the joy it brings, or what I call the audacity to enjoy myself. The singing and the bold outfit wearing of the world is not just for an elite bunch, it's for all of us. And I think we may as well embrace the freedom to experiment with style, regardless of whether we're hitting the right notes every time or not!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Long Vest

Today's real-life fashion scenario: a speaking engagement at the University of Central FL! Yesterday I was the guest speaker at The Exchange at the College of Business Administration, as well as the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership's Blackstone LaunchPad, where I shared my entrepreneurial story and lead a workshop with students (pics below). It was my third time speaking at Blackstone, and my first time at The Exchange. This is what I wore, which we stopped to photograph on the way home. The atmosphere at UCF is pretty laid back so I was going for a combo of dressed up but comfortable, and it fit the bill. I also like the cold shoulder affect you get when you pair a long vest with an off-shoulder top. It's a little style hack that I'll definitely be using to get more mileage out of my long vests!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Pink Stripe Skirt

I spotted this pink stripe skirt while browsing ShopStyle.com and thought it was the prettiest thing ever! It reminds me of this pink stripe dress, which has been a favorite of mine for years, but a longer length. I ordered it from Zulily, a site I had heard of but never tried. A bit of risk because essentially all sales are final, but there are a few left in the size I'm wearing (S - fits like size 0), and it's just as pretty in person. Pink stripes are so classic and pretty - it may just wind up being my Easter outfit this year!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Tweed Suit

Inspiration: nanette lapore via nordstrom rack

Ya'll know I'm all about wearing First Lady jackets, as I like to call them. Generally made of tweed or boucle, they lend a certain air of sophistication to any outfit you pair them with. I never would've thought to wear one with an edgier item like a criss cross black top, but the inspiration outfit was just too intriguing to pass up. My jacket is ivory and the skirt is slightly more white which I know could be a deterrent for some. It doesn't bother me too much though, and the overall feel of the outfit is similar. This jacket was a part of my favorite outfit from last winter, and I'm glad for another way to wear it this year!

Jacket: Zara, $40 (similar below)
Top: Charlotte Russe, $10 (similar, similar)
Skirt: Banana Republic, $35 (similar, similar, similar)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Yellow in Winter

Inspiration: style du monde via whoWhatWear

Yellow is really quite clever in the winter, isn't it? According to colorpsychology.org, yellow is the brightest color of the visible spectrum, and it "means happiness and optimism; it is the color of sun shining, or bright light and creativity." To me, yellow has always felt like it perks your mood right up, and who wouldn't want to bring a little bit of sunshine to winter?! I recently styled this yellow coat with a black turtleneck and floral pencil skirt, but my inspiration has the right idea pairing it with comfy sneakers and jeans. I will certainly be using this recreation of her outfit the next time the weather calls for it.

Today's Everyday Fashion: Vacation Planning

Here's one last vacation outfit before we wrap up the week! Since I'm only packing a few shoes and purses for our trip to Europe this spring, I may switch up the accessories, but the top and pants are strong contenders for my pared-down suitcase. I am mostly focused on bringing things I already own, but a pair of cropped tie waist pants felt like both the perfect addition to my closet and my suitcase on this trip. They are lighter than jeans but heavier than shorts - the perfect hybrid that makes them work for a wide range of weather. And I love the way a tie waist looks. I shared more tie waist pants on a budget, below!

Top: TJ Maxx, $12 (similar, similar)
Pants: TJ Maxx/ 7 For All Mankind, $50

Three casual vacation looks so far!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Hot Pink

I try not to play favorites with colors, I love them all! But hot pink is way up there on the list of favorites to wear. This shirt was the most perfect neon shade when I spotted it in the store, and the ideal fit, too. I won't be wearing this outfit for a few months, but sharing it with you now in case you would like to find this top at a local store, plus I'm sharing similar tops below that could be good ideas for Valentine's Day next week. They are all so pretty - I'd gladly wear them all!
