Today's Everyday Fashion: Payless x 2

Neon sneakers, $25

I love shoes, and I love saving money, so I'm really excited to talk about shoes on a budget today! I teamed up with the ultimate source for affordable footwear, Payless Shoe Source, to feature two pairs from their site.

My first pick was neon sneakers for only $25. They come in a whopping 25 different color combinations, and are perfect for a brisk walk in the park or a light workout. I love wearing colorful work out gear year-round and neon sneakers get me motivated to stay active no matter the season. They are super lightweight, making them perfect to pack in your suitcase the next time you travel. Plus they would look just as cute with jeans and a yellow raincoat this fall!

Next up, I selected these striped wedges for $20. Preppy stripes and woven accessories are two trends I'm loving right now. These wedges go great with a sundress or shorts right now while it's still hot, but will also easily transition into fall with jeans and a navy sweater like I’m wearing here.

Which outfit do you like better?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Straw Tote

Colorful top, white jeans and straw tote

I was so excited when I ordered this straw tote online. It was 60% off with a coupon code and I am gaga for the colorful tassels. When it arrived, though, I quickly realized it may not be practical in real life. I can take it with me when we drive to the beach, or for a pool party, but it will most definitely not fit into a suitcase. What's a girl to do? I wondered if maybe I could work it into an outfit for the airport (top picture) so that I could take it with me? I also paired it with flip flops and a hat, for shopping at a farmer's market or lunch at the beach. Am I reaching here? Probably a little, but I am just crazy enough about this bag to try to make it work. More straw bags with questionable practicality, below!

When I first debuted this shirt a couple years ago I called it my Hamburglar shirt. (Am I going to prison, or to Paris? It's hard to tell.) I wore today's outfit for a meeting and dinner in downtown Orlando recently (hat on while it was sunny, and hat off during dinner). I've always worn this top during cooler weather with a coat and jeans so it was great to pair it with shorts to switch things up. And despite the bad rap horizontal stripes sometimes have, I think they can be super flattering and fun - check out more picks under $100 below!

White blazer with dark flares

Oh you know, just rocking a white blazer and flares, inspired by Jessica Alba. I used old jeans from 5 years ago in my version; the only things missing are pockets on the front of my flares. This style eluded me last year (via J.Crew, here). After being on the hunt for jeans with front flap pockets for what feels like ages, it looks like I'll get another chance since so many stores are carrying them this year. I've got my eye on #1 and #5 below!

Today I'm sharing an outfit we photographed several months ago. I absolutely love my inspiration's outfit; she looks fabulous. However, I don't think I'm cool enough to pull off this combination! The shoes and jacket are great together, and I definitely wear heels with shorts (usually open toe sandals). But I would never think of putting these boyfriend shorts with proper pumps and a boucle jacket. This is exactly why I love using inspiration photos so much though. There's no better way to try out something new and push yourself out of your comfort zone! I'm glad I tried it!

I have some great news to share today - the Deux Mains sandal sale was a success! They sold more sandals online during the week of the sale, than they sold online all of last year!! Watch the video of them sharing the good news with the artisans in Haiti - they are so excited! A HUGE thank you to everyone who ordered a pair of Deux Mains sandals. Your purchase makes such a huge impact on the lives in this video, as well as a small ripple in the Haitian economy. Thank you!!! xoxo - J. (Read the whole story and see our trip to Haiti here and here.)

About my look: I'm taking notes from January Jones by wearing white on white with a Panama hat. It's the perfect outfit for today's topic because I'm wearing my new Deux Mains sandals, too!

About a year ago someone asked me what my favorite outfit of all time is. I said "Probably a white v-neck t-shirt and jeans." JJ overheard us talking and chimed in, "That's not your favorite outfit! A bathing suit is." I gotta hand it to him, he knows me better than I know myself sometimes. I would live in the water all day long if you let me, and I love everything that comes with it - the swim suit, the coverup, sunglasses, etc. What outfit makes you feel most in your element?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Fall Preview

Fashion is funny. We're nowhere near the end of sumer but "fall fashion" is already in full effect. I always try to resist it, but inevitably I start craving fall clothes well before fall actually arrives. Today's look is something I'm planning to wear for fall, and I think all of the items I'm wearing will be favorites this year. Time will tell though, I've still got plenty of summer fashion left in me to finish out the next couple months! Are you still in summer mode or are you already craving fall fashion?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Bloomingdale's on a Budget

Bloomingdale's top, $23
Bloomingdale's skirt, $58

Gosh I love Bloomingdale's. It's a beautiful department store that carries some amazing brands. It is, however, one of those stores that sometimes feels like it's out of my budget. Which is silly because they carry tons of great things under $100. Take for example this brand "Aqua" that I've been seeing in my online searches lately (I feature it a LOT on the blog). It's exclusive to Bloomingdale's and everything is really budget friendly. So when Bloomingdale's reached out to do a post this summer (my first time working with them, yay!), and I had my choice of anything on their site, I went immediately to Aqua because it's a brand I've been dying to try.

My first choice was this striped crop top with a neoprene midi skirt. The top is paired with a tight mini skirt on their website, but I wanted to balance out the tighter top with a voluminous bottom. I love this overall outfit concept, but it's the first time I've ever tried it so I'm so uncertain about the proportions here. The skirt may be slightly too big for my frame? I'm undecided!

Bloomingdale's dress, $57

Next up is a bright blue dress. The pattern immediately caught my eye; it reminds me of the ocean and white coral and makes me want to go snorkeling! It looked short on the model on the website but I always assume things will be longer on me since I'm not model height. It's definitely a bit short on me though. Thankfully it's designed to be a loose fit (I'll go short but not when it's tight) and the material is stretchy so sitting down is a breeze and doesn't mean a bare bottom on your chair. Verdict: I'm planning to wear it for my birthday dinner!

Bloomingdale's dress, $98

My third pick is this hot pink little number. The shape is fabulous, the color is fabulous and the length is better. I'm afraid this one is a little too small for me though (you can see it pulling across my ribs, and around the arm holes) so it's going back. I can't wait to shop the Aqua section at my local store to see what I can exchange it for. (ps. I also got this black skirt, which is in my outfit post tomorrow!)

Some more of my favorite Aqua picks are below. They definitely have a boho vibe going that I love, as well as more polished pieces, and more than a thousand items to choose from. Check out Aqua here and let me know if you've ever tried it and what you thought!

Bridesmaid Dresses - Sorella Vita
Bridesmaid Robes - Sunset to Sunrise
Bridesmaid monogram totes & cosmetic bags - Ooh Baby Infinity

In my third and final wedding post, I wanted to recap what our wedding party wore! The bridesmaids donned this convertible dress in blush from Sorella Vita. I love the idea of everyone wearing the same dress but getting to customize how they felt most comfortable wearing it! (There are optional "straps" that can be worn 7 different ways.) The bridesmaid gifts were floral robes for getting ready, and monogram totes and cosmetic bags in a pale pink print.

The groomsmen wore their own navy suits, and we purchased pink, gingham shirts from J.Crew Factory for them to wear. Everyone looked so dapper, but more importantly we had a blast all weekend long. When choosing your wedding party, my best advice is to picture who you want celebrating with you at every moment. Our bridal porty contributed to an atmosphere of a day that is was upbeat, relaxed and FUN!

I also wanted to share a few decor photos, below. We went for a bit of a city meets country vibe. We got married on a farm and our reception was in a pole barn, however, we decorated it with chandeliers, Chiavari chairs, draping, and a mix of sequin, lace and silk dupioni linens. I squealed with delight when I saw the final product, it was perfect!

If you’re like me, you love watching reruns of “Say Yes to the Dress” on repeat. I’m fascinated with what goes into the decision of what to wear on your wedding day, and so in the spirit of all things bridal, I’m sharing my dress story with you today!

Everyone approaches their Big Day differently, so the fashion and style decisions could not be more different for different brides. For me, this was a time to splurge and not let “sales” be an influence because I am usually SO frugal when it comes to shopping! And ultimately my top priority was to make amazing memories, so I wanted to feel comfortable in what I was wearing so I could concentrate fully on the important stuff that day.

I started my dress journey with an initial visit to a local bridal salon, The Collection. I tried on several shapes and styles to help narrow down what I was looking for and posted about my experience here. Right away, I felt fluff and structure were both too over the top for what I was looking for. I didn’t want tulle, a big skirt, a corset, or underwire. I narrowed my focus to laid-back boho style for my wedding day, but then many of the boho-type dresses I tried on had empire waists or no waist and looked terrible on my figure. Thankfully, my wedding dress met a good halfway point. Without a single piece of boning or corset, it managed to have a great shape, while maintaining the unstructured vibe I wanted.

I found my dress during my second appointment at The Collection. It was an Inbal Dror trunk show, and so my dress was approx. dress #6 that I tried on. I had that bridal moment but then went home, panicked that JJ wouldn’t like it, and spent several more months shopping. I went to 4 salons and probably tried on 30-40 dresses. But I kept coming back to the same gown in my head!

As soon as I knew it was "the one," I called my bridal consultant and made a commitment. Inbal Dror is an up and coming designer in the States (already huge in Israel) and each gown requires 37 measurements and is custom made. The runway sample I tried on took some serious imagination, and I made some changes - raising the neckline quite a bit, and making the back a “V” shape instead of a rounded shape. I couldn’t wait to see the final result!

The day it arrived, we realized we had a lot of work to do because I had lost 12 pounds and 2 dress sizes after we ordered it. The alterations were difficult (the dress has no seams!) and it took many rounds to get it right. As the wedding day approached I was nervous about whether we could fix it, but the seamstress at The Collection was a pro and when I picked it up it was absolutely perfect.

I always had friends with me when I shopped for dresses, but I didn't tell anyone which dress I picked, and kept everything a secret until our wedding day. I knew that my dress wouldn’t be popular with everyone; there isn’t a single dress on earth that would please every person – and ultimately I preferred for it to be edgy versus a crowd pleaser. I did a dress reveal with my bridesmaids (pictures below) which was so much fun - I highly recommend it!

If there’s anything I can share with future brides, it’s go with your gut. Don’t worry too much about what anyone else thinks. The best advice I got was “your groom wants you to be happy and confident and he’s less concerned with the style you choose” and that advice can apply to anyone in your life. Also, while I love a good sale, I hope you can get something that you truly enjoy wearing. One strategy for staying on budget is selling your dress after the wedding – just keep in mind that something could happen to it like a tear or stain, so proceed with caution.

I'm still in disbelief that I got to wear this dress on my wedding day. The end result was perfect for me, and I felt like the luckiest girl alive to marry my husband, and wearing this dress was just the icing on the cake. My wish is for every bride to feel that way on her wedding day. It’s your special day, and the most important thing about your dress? Wear it with confidence and have FUN!

I was looking at old Pinterest boards the other day and these rainbow tie dye shorts caught my eye. Two summers ago one of my best friends from college heard that I was dying for some rainbow tie dye shorts, so she made them and sent them to me as a surprise! The Pinterest photo inspired me to get them out of the drawer again this summer and create a fun, colorful combo I've never tried together before. Rainbows, aviators, tassels and tie dye... perfect for a summer concert (my original plan for this outfit), or for the beach. Would you wear tie dye or make your own?

"Swell" is a surf term, which so perfectly sums up Swell.com. It's full of beach-y, boho, laid-back style that I absolutely adore. It was my first time shopping the site, but figuring out how to spend my $100 gift card was no easy task, thanks to the bevy of cute dresses that they offer.

For my first pick, I chose a Swell brand long-sleeve dress. I have quite a few boho printed tops in my closet but I've never owned a dress quite like this. I already can't wait to wear with boots and a jacket this fall! For my second pick, I went with a white off-shoulder sundress by Rip Curl that has a beautiful embroidered trim. White dresses are the ultimate summer staple and I styled mine two ways - with heels and with flats, for different occasions.

Check out some more of my favorites under $100 below. And if beach-y, boho is totally your thing too, then head to Swell.com to shop!

Troubleshooting Victory

BEFORE

BEFORE

AFTER

AFTER

All of you with good vision will be relieved to hear that I took today off from blogging to figure out what is wrong with my photos lately. JJ kept saying that they are really blurry, but I may need to get my eyes checked, because I couldn't see it.  We've been troubleshooting for weeks, and finally figured it out today. Check out the before and after - it's night and day!!

If you're a SquareSpace user, I fixed it by inserting blocks called "Spacer" on either side, versus resizing the image. To glue photos together I used Photojoiner.net, versus taking a screenshot in Microsoft Word. If you have any other photo joining tools for Macs let me know, because that site seems fairly primitive.

I'm so excited to have finally figured it out, and humbled to admit that it took me months to notice and then fix it. I also want to mention that I wore my underwear inside out for an entire day, not once, but twice, a couple weeks ago.... thus is my life! This happy dance is appropriate for a little celebration that the pictures are better and my underwear is on right today. I'll take the victory!!

(ps. Outfit details are in this post.)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Two Ways

This floral skirt is one of my favorite things I've added to my closet so far this year, so today I'm sharing two ways to wear it. The first look with the blue top, I wore to a bridal shower this spring. The second look (orange top) is for a night out. It appears a little buttoned-up at first, but the crop top is flirty when you move around, (or, ahem, full out bust a move like I'm illustrating!). Flash Sale for Haiti

Deux Mains boutique & sandals
Deux Mains sandals, made from recycled tires

I'm in Haiti this week with JJ. It's a long, serendipitous story about why we are here and why I'm doing a flash sale, so let's hash out the sale before I dive into details. This week Deux Mains is offering a $18.99 flash sale on sandals that are handmade by Haitian artisans in Haiti from recycled tires and genuine leather. The sale also includes a 10% off coupon for their new styles including the Bel Nanm style that I'm wearing in the pictures above (note: go down a size for this style - they run big and the leather will stretch). Go to my Facebook page here to "claim" the offer. If you don't have Facebook, please email me.

Look for this on Facebook and click "Get Offer":

Deux Mains flash sale

Now let's talk about why. My husband's family moved to Haiti when he was just 6 months old and they stayed for 5 years. His first memories are of Haiti and his first words were in Creole. It's hard to express just how much Haiti means to him, but he has carried it with him all these years, and got involved with a company called Rebuild Globally several years ago. The founder Julie splits her time between Orlando and Haiti, and JJ sits on their board (as a non-financial member, it's a nonprofit) and Julie has become a good friend of ours. So when the board decided to take a trip to Haiti this summer, I volunteered to tag along. I couldn't wait to see JJ's childhood home, but this was ultimately HIS work trip, I never expected to get involved.

A couple days into our trip I fell hard. I fell in love with Haiti, the people, and with the Deux Mains sandals. I met the people who make the sandals and heard their stories through an interpreter. I saw the workshop and new boutique (pictures below). They just released several new sandal styles and they are gorgeous, and have evolved enormously from the first prototypes JJ brought home several years ago.

Helping countries like Haiti is an incredibly complex topic that I don't understand fully, but I will share this thought from Jolina, who is Rebuild's first employee in Haiti and is now a manager and share holder. She said that "after the earthquake, Julie [the founder] could've brought me rice and beans, but that would be gone by now. Instead, she gave me a job and gave me my life back." Each of the 21 employees supports an average of 8-10 people with their paycheck. It's the difference between charity, and changing things from the inside out. Haiti's unemployment rate is 59.4%.

I listened and fell in love, and I really wanted to do something. The team recently upped their productivity but now they have a stockpile of inventory and need some sales to move that inventory. So I came up with the idea of a flash sale of last year's sandals and pitched it to Julie, and she said yes! Which means you guys get a coupon code for $18.99 for all sale sandals (about 250 pairs in stock), PLUS a 10% discount on all new styles, Please share the sale with your friends!

This a purchase you can truly feel good about. Not only does Rebuild provide sustainable fashion through the Deux Mains brand, and dignified employment in Haiti, but they also have developed an education program for kids that has a 100% pass rate (Haiti's national average 30%).

If you're ever in Haiti be sure to check out the Deux Mains boutique. It's near the Port au Prince airport and anyone can visit! These are pictures of the front and inside.

Disclosure: neither me or my husband received any financial gain or gifts to share our experience. We have no financial involvement in Rebuild or Deux Mains and we paid for our own travel to Haiti. Your purchases don't affect us, but they do affect these beautiful people:

I'm so excited to share a special project today! I hope you enjoy! If you want to see more or have other questions we didn't cover, let me know in the comments or via social!

Leave it to Banana Republic to entice me to finally try the asymmetrical skirt/skort trend. This skirt is trendy and a bit edgy, but also conservative enough to be in my comfort zone. It was a sale item that I tried on at the store, but I found the tank online. It's the most perfect drapey racerback; I'm tempted to get more colors. I can't wait to wear this with peep toe booties and a leather jacket this fall!

It's from their Conscious Collection, which means it's "sustainable" or eco-friendly.  It's got a slight faded look to it, and I love the fit for the sweltering 100 degree days we've been having lately. I think I tend to fixate on one brand for a few weeks (or months) and right now it's H&M for me. I shared some more new arrivals I'm loving below!
