Today's Everyday Fashion: Beach Bags

Mint tiered dress with tassel necklaces

I wore this mint dress for a night out in 2012 (here). Today, I'm wearing it as a beach cover up, inspired by Olivia Palermo! The colorful tassel necklaces, hat and pink clutch (I throw one in my beach bag to keep smaller belongings together) were easy additions, but my beach bag collection is quite small for a Florida girl. It's one turquoise tote that is wearing out, and several "free gift with purchase" bags. So I gathered some fun options under $90 (below). Now it's a matter of picking just one!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Favorite Skirt

IMG_9968.JPG

Is it too soon to call a brand new skirt "favorite"? Maybe so, but I really, really like it. I found this floral, textured skirt at H&M this week and wore it for JJ's birthday dinner. (That's my hand on the way to dinner - I thought the "love" bracelet was particularly appropriate for the occasion.) It was a night of sushi, same side booth sitting and birthday cake, all in my (new, favorite) floral skirt!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Boyfriend Shorts

Chambray shirt and boyfriend shorts

I'm sharing a few secrets about boyfriend shorts today. 1. If you gain weight, boyfriend shorts/jeans become regular jeans. That was my reality last year, so I found it very helpful to have a couple things in my closet that still fit! 2. Normally I recommend shopping by inseam length for shorts, but boyfriend shorts are tricky. Mine are 2.5" inseam here, but fit more like 5" because they hang low, so consider that when shopping. 3. Boyfriend shorts might be oversized, but they won't make you look oversized. They really can be flattering (not to mention, they are super comfy)! Would you wear them?

I'm declaring 2015 the year stomachs were liberated. It seems that everywhere I look, there are two piece "sets" up for grabs (like the options below). I have yet to try it, so I'm dipping my toe both literally and figuratively in the water today with a look for the pool. (At least that's how I'm wearing it - I'm not really sure if it's intended as a cover up?) This was also my first time ordering from BooHoo, a UK retailer. The shipping speed was a bit slow, and one item that showed up was totally the wrong item, so this cover up is all I'm keeping. They do not pay for return shipping but they are in this case since the item was wrong. I'll probably give them another shot but I wasn't hugely impressed. I am happy to have this cover up for our next pool party!

White Plum dress

A great floral dress for summer! The fit is great and the material is wrinkle-free. So effortless to throw on and look polished.

White Plum dress

It’s no secret that I love the color yellow! The longer back on this dress makes it super easy to wear, and the color can be paired with neon for summer, or with navy coat and cognac boots this fall.

White Plum top

The print on this top is adorable. The lightweight material and bright colors would also pair well with blue or white jeans!

White Plum shorts

These elastic-waist shorts are as comfy as pajamas, but so on trend for summer! I’m wearing a S but would size up to a M.

White Plum dress

This white shirtdress has a cute southwest-inspired print and looks great with cognac accessories. The waistband features a cinched design, and I added a belt over it because the size S was roomy.

I love shift dresses with sleeves and this one is a fun print. Try pairing it with colorful accessories, or with neutral accessories with a boho vibe.

Re-creating inspiration photos takes a healthy dose of "I can do that" attitude. I hardly ever have the exact pieces I'm trying to re-create, but once I get over that initial resistance of believing it's possible, I start opening my mind to things that are similar and creative ways to achieve an outfit. (Just like today's J.Crew inspired look.) You don't always need to buy everything you love, just love what you already have in your closet! How to Pack for an Alaskan Cruise

Alaska Cruise - Vancouver

Packing for our Carnival cruise to Alaska proved to be quite the style challenge. My Florida wardrobe doesn’t contain as many cold-weather clothes, and my cold-weather fashion game is weak like my backhand in tennis. Not to mention that winter clothes take up SO much space, and our suitcases needed to be under 50 pounds for air travel. Plus, I really didn’t know what to expect.

Here’s everything I learned. My hits and misses, and what I wish I would’ve known when packing for an Alaskan cruise.

Cruise dinner outfits - Same shoes, 4 ways

1. Dinner Attire

On a Carnival cruise, there are two "cruise elegant" nights, which more or less means “cocktail attire.” So I packed one pair of heels, simple black pumps, and then packed several things that could go with them. I wore #1 and #3 above to “cruise elegant” nights, and the other two to regular dinner nights.

You will see a large range of attire on a cruise, so how dressy you want to go is really up to you. I felt more comfortable having a pair of heels, but they aren’t required. My husband brought one pair of dress shoes, which he wore on the two “cruise elegant” nights with dress pants, no jacket or tie (picture below – unfortunately you can’t see the shoes).

J's Everyday Fashion

Other nights he went more casual even when I was in heels:

Cruise attire

Let’s also talk about being warm during dinner. This tripped me up a bit… did I need a coat to go over my dinner outfits?

Alaska cruise attire

The answer is no. I did not need to bring this black wool coat with a faux fur collar with me. It took up a lot of space in my suitcase and proved unnecessary. Inside the ship, the temperature is controlled and you won’t need a jacket to/from or during dinner, or during cruise activities like comedy shows. And when you do go outside, you will want to change into your most warm clothes, like these (see next section).

Alaska cruise attire

2.     On deck.

When the ship is moving, and especially at night… it is REALLY cold! You will need:

-       A warm coat. I lived in this gray fleece.
-       Shoes with socks to keep your tootsies warm.
-       Gloves and hats.
-       Not pictured: the hot chocolate and tea you’ll be drinking a lot!

Also... it’s windy.

"Outfit pictures on a cruise be like..."

“Outfit pictures on a cruise be like…”

Alaska cruise attire

3.     Around the ship.

These outfits are for those in-between moments. Like traveling to and from your cruise, when you’re on deck and it’s warm (when the ship stops moving), you are headed to brunch, or additional outfits to wear for casual dinner nights. I packed a couple dresses, three pairs of jeans (blue, ivory and black) and long-sleeve tops.

Alaska cruise attire

4.     Off the ship.

What you wear off the ship is going to vary greatly based on two things: the weather, and what you do.

a. Weather:

SE Alaska is a rainforest (100 inches per year is rainforest status and Juneau gets 300 inches of rain per year!), so I would recommend bringing waterproof shoes and a waterproof jacket. From there, the temperature varies. We had unusually warm (70 degree) and dry weather, but a friend did the same cruise the week after us and it rained and was really cold. So I would recommend being prepared for both and plan on layering to be safe.

b. What you do:

Hiking: I thought it would be cold, so I packed jeans to hike in, but I wish I had brought more yoga pants. I was way too hot in picture #1 (even with my gray jacket off), and in #2 that outfit was never supposed to see the light of day. I saw lots of people hiking in cute yoga pants and wished I had brought mine!

Zip lining: In #3 we went zip lining and we both wore cargo pants, which was perfect.

Sight-seeing: If you plan to sight-see and shop all day, then you can wear cute boots and adorable fall/winter type outfits. We planned to be really active (hiking, fishing, kayaking) which is why I dressed less fashionable and more practical. I spotted some stylish outfits at port though!

Alaska cruise attire

5.     To workout.

One thing I definitely did not have room in my suitcase for was gym shoes. So I wore my hiking sneaks to the gym. In #1, I jogged on the walking track with my binoculars wrapped around me in case we spotted wildlife (they announce it over the loud speaker). And the other two I wore to the gym.

Alaska cruise attire

Okay… let’s summarize what I packed. These are all the jackets and shoes I brought, as pictured in my Carnival closet on board.

Jackets (in order as pictured):
1.     A coat for “elegant attire” night – I recommend skipping this (black heavy wool)
2.     Light jacket for wearing around the ship/travel (navy lightweight wool)
3.     Light jacket for wearing around the ship/travel (olive army jacket)
4.     One very warm jacket (gray fleece)
5.     One waterproof jacket (yellow jacket)

Shoes
1.     One pair of flats that are easy to throw on (JJ opted for flip flops)
2.     One pair of heels or dress shoes (I went with simple black pumps)
3.     One pair of hiking boots or athletic shoes (mine, JJ’s)
4.     One pair of flat boots

Everything else
-       Three pairs of jeans – blue, black and ivory for around the ship, and traveling to and from
-       Various tops – long-sleeve blouses, light sweaters to wear with jeans
-       Casual dresses – dresses to wear with tall boots and/or leggings
-       Clothes for excursions – skinny cargo pants for zip lining, yoga pants or jeans for hiking
-       Cocktail attire – two nights worth of “cruise elegant” outfits
-       Athletic gear – for the gym and/or for hikes

Hiking checklist
-       Backpack
-       Waterproof jacket and shoes
-       Water bottle (bring your own and fill it up on board)
-       Snacks that bears can’t smell (like granola bars)
-       Camera, selfie stick
-       Monopod for camera, also doubles as walking stick
-       Ziplock bags for electronics in case it rains

Today's Everyday Fashion: Black and White

Black graphic tee, windowpane pants, red purse, yellow pumps

I have been so attracted to bold black and white styles lately! I actually ordered the Banana skirt that's pictured below - I think somewhere in the back of my mind I was remembering this inspiration photo, because I love her outfit. I tried the skirt with this t-shirt but the fit was all wrong (the skirt either needs to be more volume or less volume to work on my frame). Not a bit discouraged, I tried the same basic idea with these black and white windowpane pants from last winter and loved it. I added ketchup and mustard accessories and it's my own quirky version of casual Friday!

Today’s Everyday Fashion: Hallmark Signature Inspired

Hallmark Signature inspired

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Hallmark through their partnership with POPSUGAR Select. While I was compensated to write a post about Hallmark Signature, all opinions are my own.

I gather style inspiration from many places: magazines, catalogs, and mannequins. But I never realized how inspiring a greeting card could be until I was issued a challenge to create an outfit inspired by Hallmark Signature.

With assignment in hand, I headed to my local Hallmark store and asked them to point me towards the Signature section. I was instantly impressed, because the cards are gorgeous! Many come with little “extras” like a removable plush owl, a hair pin (to really use in your hair), or an easel that can be placed as a knickknack on a shelf. It’s a great resource - you get a greeting card and a little gift for under $10, yes please!

I was instantly drawn to this piñata card to use as my style inspiration. The inside says, “Hope your day is filled with MUCHO fun!” so as a greeting card it works for many different occasions. (Although it’s so adorable I’m going to have a hard time giving it away.) It reminded me of many favorite items in my closet, and I love the fun colors. I pulled out this rainbow stripe dress to wear for the day, and accessorized with a turquoise necklaces, yellow purse and coral shoes. With the greeting card in hand I felt like I was headed to a fun party!

I was so inspired by this project, that I put together two additional looks with Hallmark Signature cards. This first card has removable bow clips. The gold bows come off the card and you can use them in your hair, on shoes or a clutch. I think my friend with a little girl will be the perfect person to give this card to – she’ll love playing with the bows.

Inspiration: Limited

I had a serious "I want that" moment when I saw this catalog photo. Turns out, it doesn't look as good on me as it does on her. Which is why I love taking photos of new items before I wear them, because photos are so helpful in seeing how things really look. It can be a selfie in the mirror or taken by a friend, but I swear by it. Seeing them side by side, the skirt looks better on the model's shape, and my old top is not nearly as similar as I thought (shape is similar but print is a lighter color palette). I'm also trying on new shoes here - but I can see in the picture that they don't come up high enough on my foot (I want it more at the ankle like designer pairs I've seen). I may try this outfit idea with other items already in my closet, I'm always game for a good mix of neutrals!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Truth

A couple days ago I went down a rabbit hole called Instagram, and discovered a whole new world that I was previously unaware of. So. many. pretty. pictures. I left feeling inspired, and wanting to get creative with outfits and photographs. Like this photo above. In Instagram world, the caption would read "Sunday after church" or something equally whimsical.

But part of me feels uncomfortable posting this photo without sharing that when I got home from church I realized I still had a huge price tag sticker on the bottom of my shoe. Shoes that despite their tiny, practical heel gave me blisters almost instantly. And that I only brought the hat with me to church for photo purposes. It will always be in my nature to want to share that kind of information, no matter how popular sharing perfect, idyllic pictures becomes.

I hope the creativity keeps flowing, but for now I'll serve it with a big slice of reality on the side. Just like I like it.

Top 8 Reasons Cruises Make Good Honeymoons

Our Honeymoon Alaska Cruise

If you’re like us, you love to travel and could imagine yourself going just about anywhere for your honeymoon. What made us choose a Carnival cruise, then, for this milestone vacation? Here are 8 reasons why we think cruises make great honeymoons!

1.     Included room service.

In case you want to hole up in your room for days on end and never leave, you totally can. The room service food and delivery is free (gratuity is recommended) and it’s available 24/7!

Our Honeymoon Alaska Cruise

2.     See the world from your room.

Both pictures above were taken from the balcony…. in our room! You can literally watch the scenery change as the ship moves, while you stay stationary in the comfort of your own room. Or if you opt for a room without a balcony or window, then you can think of your room as a moving hotel. You get to see different cities and islands, all while staying in the same place!

Our Honeymoon Alaska Cruise

3. No cell phones.

Carnival offers Wi-Fi on board, however, a ship out at sea is a mostly “unplugged” kind of a vacation. For busy entrepreneurs like ourselves, a cruise is an amazing way to unplug, unwind and give each other our 100% undivided attention.

Our Honeymoon Alaska Cruise

4. Dinner dates, made easy.

There’s no need to do the following on your honeymoon: decide when or where you’re going to eat dinner, make a reservation, budget extra money for food, or even pull out your wallet to pay for dinner. It’s all included in your cruise. It’s super easy to have a delicious sit-down meal, every night of your trip!

5. Two words: couples massage.

On the first day of our cruise, we headed to the Cloud 9 Spa for an hour-long couple’s massage. It was relaxing, rejuvenating and such a fun experience to be able to do together. The perfect honeymoon kick-off! (Note: there is an additional cost for Spa services.)

Our Honeymoon Alaska Cruise

6. Tons of date night ideas.

Sometimes you’re so relaxed on your vacation that you don’t want to plan activities or find things to do, so you wind up sitting in your hotel room all night (it’s happened to us). With a cruise comes an action-packed itinerary including comedy shows, magic shows, live theater, and daily movies on the big screen – there’s always something to do together, it's easy, and it’s all included!

7.     Professional photos.

Have you ever gone on a trip, only to return without a single photo of the two of you together? We have, which is why the professional photographers on-board Carnival cruises are pretty great. They snap pictures of you throughout the day as you depart the ship and during dinner, but they also set up mini “studios” with fun backdrops. Having your photo taken is free – then you can decide if you’d like to purchase any printed images and what size. It’s the perfect way to solve the “we really were there together but don’t have photographic evidence” dilemma.

Our Honeymoon Alaska Cruise

8. Carnival celebrates with you.

Carnival loves honeymooners. (You can even get married in the chapel on board!) We met lots of other couples on their honeymoon, and Carnival sings “happy honeymoon to you” at dinner. We felt the celebratory spirit everywhere we went – these are the “Fun ships” after all!

Our Honeymoon Alaska Cruise

We loved our Carnival honeymoon! Where would you/did you go on your honeymoon?

Happy Monday! Today’s outfit is something I wore recently for an event with JJ. He was the keynote speaker at UCF’s Masters in Social Work graduation and this is what I wore for the ceremony. I knew people would be wearing everything from flip flops to suits (the Florida norm) so I went with a mix. I wore a professional lightweight wool sheath (part of J.Crew’s “suit” collection) and made it more casual with a colorful purse and necklace, and really comfy shoes because UCF campus always requires a lot of walking. Graduations are one of those events where it's tough to know exactly what the dress code is (can vary greatly by school), so a mix of a professional and not-too-dressed up are my strategy - that way you feel comfortable no matter which way it goes!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Saturday Night

Off-shoulder top with printed shorts and fringe clutch
Off-shoulder top with printed shorts and fringe clutch

On Saturday night we checked out a new speakeasy in town while the guys watched the fight. We also got ready together which made getting dressed a lot more fun. We picked out accessories and I declared that my boho game was STRONG, especially with the addition of a fringe clutch to my off-shoulder top and printed shorts outfit. We had a blast and I love these ladies to pieces, which is always the best part - way more so than the fashion!

J.Crew Factory fitting room pics

Continuing my fitting room pictures from yesterday, my last stop was J.Crew Factory. Dress #1 is awesome but I'm in between sizes so I held off for now. Dress #2 is adorable but not my favorite shape. And in #3, I love the shorts but what's up with this top? I thought the sleeve details were interesting but the XS fit was strange. Passed on everything for now, but I always try to share fitting room pics from J.Crew Factory since they don't use models on their website!

(My sandals are Dolce Vita from 2 summers ago. This DV pair is similar. Earrings are Stella & Dot.)
