Today's Everyday Fashion: For The Bride

BCBG One Shoulder Dress
BCBG Blush Pink one shoulder dress

When I stumbled upon this gorgeous BCBG dress on Amazon, I had to have it!! I have a long list of dress-up occasions to plan for (engagement pics, 2 bridal showers, 3-night bachelorette party, and a rehearsal dinner). I have no idea which occasion I'll wear this dress for, but I know it will be perfect for at least one of them. I gathered some more dresses that would work for a bride - or anyone who's a fan of wearing white and/or blush - below. Former and upcoming brides: what did you wear for pre-wedding festivities? Favorite stores/brands to shop for special occasion dresses?

Also: Not sure why the price changed on Amazon - this dress was $123 a couple days ago, but now it's $207. Maybe it will go back down? Also, in the last photo you can see the zipper sticks out on my bum. I took it to my tailor and she "fixed" it (after this photo was taken). She added about an inch to the strap (it's adjustable) so the zipper hit lower on my bum and it looks a lot better. Buyer beware though - I don't think it lays nearly as smooth as they show on the model!

Turquoise blazer, gray sweater, ivory jeans

Statement earrings: you have my attention. It's no secret that I love a good statement necklace. I almost always have my hair down so earrings can be hard to see, I don't like when they are too heavy and tug on your earlobes, and I'm less sure about how to wear them. I gave into my craving and ordered a couple pairs recently though, and so far they are much easier to pull off (and not nearly as uncomfortable) as I imagined. A colorful blazer was the perfect match for this pair, and I rounded up a more under $50 below that would work equally well with a blazer and jeans/dress pants combo. Which do you prefer: statement necklace or statement earrings?

I've always been bad at loungewear. That part of my dresser is where old graphic tees go to die and unattractive sweatpants are in abundance. (I have a KU pair from college that I'm pretty sure JJ would burn if he could!) I found these pants at Forever 21 a few months ago (first picture) and decided to give them a try. This style of jogger pant is all over stores right now (see below) - and some people even wear them with heels. I decided to re-create a J.Crew catalog photo, for a look I would wear around the house. (Hat and all - when I'm cold and my hair is wet, I'll wear this hat!)

Look #2 is my solution for running errands before yoga class. I throw on this funnel neck sweatshirt and some slip-on shoes (Minnetonkas like I'm wearing, or my Sperrys) over my yoga outfit. I never put on workout clothes to go run errands, however, I swear I wind up running errands before or after every workout, so I wear looks like these more often than I realize.

How do you dress for errands to/and from working out? And what kinds of loungewear do you wear at home?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Chi Chi London

You may recognize this dress from a recent post! It was close to being sold out, so I decided to order it and see if it would work for engagement photos (we haven't taken them yet). It's even bigger/fuller than I imagined - it felt like a pillow in the package when it arrived. It's so dramatic and formal, I'm not sure where I would feel comfortable wearing it. But for photos it's got the perfect theatrical feel and the shape is awesome. (Note: that "strap" on my shoulder is the hanger insert showing through - they definitely need to be cut out if I keep it, there's no way hide them within the sheer top. Also, I recommend going up a size. I usually order two sizes up for UK brands, but I went 3 sizes up because it was the only size left and it fits. I'm wearing the US 8, I'm usually a US 0/2.) The blue color I'm wearing is already sold out, but when I searched this brand (Chi Chi London) for similar dresses I was pleasantly surprised how many gorgeous variations they make, including plus size. I shared some favorites below. Where would you wear this dress?

Wool floppy hat, boho top, distressed jeans

If I had to pick one "uniform" to wear forever it'd be a white or ivory top, distressed jeans and cognac shoes. I've worn variations of this look for as long as I can remember - often with a small piece of turquoise jewelry, and often a simple white v-neck tee. Today's version with my new J.Crew top has a bohemian vibe. The hat and shoes make a bold statement, but simple sandals would also work, or printed bottoms. Infinite possibilities!

Pink pants, cobalt top, mustard cardigan

This time of year is tough - the sun goes down early, and the cold temps make you want to curl up in some fuzzy socks and sweatpants and not leave the couch. I was craving some bold color to shock my senses into a happy, summer mood. I'd love to own a yellow wool coat like my inspiration someday, but I used a mustard cardigan since that's what I had in my closet. Check out some colorful, mood-lifting coats below though - there are so many fun colors, which one would you choose to infuse some color into winter?

When it's really cold outside and you're piling on the layers, do you ever feel like Joey on Friends? That's how I felt in the first photo. My shirt is tucked into my skirt, my sweater is folded under, plus the leggings, plus boots. Not to mention the coat and gloves that would go over it. Do you think I also look like I have navy blue skin? I've noticed when you wear tights and a matching sleeve (or undershirt) it can create an illusion like it's your skin peeking through. (Duh moment: heather gray leggings may have looked better and solved this dilemma.) Instead I switched over to pumps to show a fall/spring version of this look!

Color combo to try: camel, periwinkle and ivory

Not only does J.Crew come up with genius color combos, but they also make them work for unlikely seasons. Like the periwinkle turtleneck and camel coat they paired together for winter in the inspiration photo. I substituted a blazer for a coat, resulting in something a bit more appropriate for Florida winters. Hopefully this color combo inspires you though, no matter your weather!

Today's Everyday Fashion: LOFT Review

LOFT peplum dress: regular vs. petite

This LBD and the leopard dress below were two of my finds during the day after Christmas sales. The only problem? I visited three LOFT locations, and they only had the dresses in Petite sizes. Since the price was the same online, I ordered the same dresses in Regular sizes so I could compare. This sparked an idea for a post: how different are Petite sizes compared to Regular? Here's a photo comparison and my full review!

LOFT peplum dress, $45
Size 0 on the left, size 2P on the right.
In general, a Regular size and one size up in Petite are comparable. From the front, you can hardly detect a difference.

How Regular sizes fit versus Petite!

This is the same dress from the side. This was my main reason for ordering the Regular size - on the right (Petite) you can see the line on the peplum is hitting me too high. On the left (Regular) it's right where it should be (under my bum, not over it). Verdict: the Regular size is the definite winner. (And I'm definitely keeping this one! I love the scuba material and it's rare to find a dress that fits this well off the rack.)

LOFT leopard dress: regular versus petite

LOFT leopard dress, $45
Size 2 on the left, size 4P on the right.

I went a size up on both of these, because the neck was way too tight. I have the back held back with a chip clip because either option would need to be taken in on the bottom. From the front on this dress you can definitely see that the right one (Petite) is shorter.

Regular vs. Petite sizes - how they fit

Same dress. From the side you can see the right is shorter, and the waistline is hitting me higher. I'd say this one is a safe call either way - depending on how short you want the dress (especially with the high neckline to balance it out), and where you want to wear it (work vs. a night out). Verdict: I might skip this one altogether since it requires alterations.

Overall, I might be too tall to be considered "Petite" (5'7") but sometimes it actually fits me better. My tips for non-Petites shopping the Petite section:

1. Petites are a great option when the smallest size they have is still too big on you. Even if you are tall, a size 0P is smaller than a 0R (2P and 0R are comparable), so give it a try.
2. Petites work if you want a shorter, cropped fit. For dresses and skirts, they will fit you shorter and hit you in a different place. This can be beneficial if you try on the Regular and it's not fitting correctly, or you want a different length. I once tried on a pencil skirt at Banana and it was too high-waisted. So I went a size up in Petite, it fit around my hips, but hit my knees in the exact same spot (not any shorter) so I bought the Petite. For pants, a skinny trouser in a Petite may give you the "cropped" appearance you're looking for, even if you're quite tall.
3. Petite sleeves are cut shorter, so use caution when buying Petite tops or jackets. You may need to be okay with permanently rolling the sleeves. They will also be cut shorter in the torso. If a boyfriend blazer feels too long, try it in Petite and roll the sleeves.
4. When to buy Petites? Anytime you're looking for a shorter, cropped appearance, the smallest size is too big, or it's worth trying on if you love the item but they only have a Petite size. You never know unless you try!

LOFT black lace jumpsuit

LOFT jumpsuit, $49 (now $37)

This jumpsuit is not a Petite size, however, I wanted to share a review for it as well. I wore my casual black jumpsuit so much this summer, that I'm considering keeping this fancy version. I love that is has pockets, but the elastic waistband and back feel a bit casual for the lace elements. LOFT also has a great casual black jumpsuit here.

Have you ever shopped Petite or Tall sections? Have you tried on any of these items at LOFT?

Disclosure: I have a merchandise credit left over from working with Ann Taylor 2 years ago that I used for my purchases. The LOFT company was not in any way involved with or aware of this post.

I might be wearing camo and leopard like my inspiration, but my face is less "supermodel sexy" and more "I'm squinting because I have a massive migraine!" I was headed out the door and wanted to take a quick picture of this leopard + military jacket look (reminds me of this combo I shared last week). These are my first-ever pair of flats and I've been wearing them non-stop, so finding another pair in a different color is on my wish list. I love the d'orsay style, but both of the first two pairs below sold out in my size before I could snap them up! A blog post from two summers ago inspired me to put together this outfit and wear it recently. It's the same sweater + tee combination with some slight modifications. Plaid scarf worn under a belt
Outfit idea: plaid scarf worn under a belt

Today's catalog photo inspired me to wear a plaid scarf under a belt and I'm so glad I gave it a try! I tried this trick 4 years ago on the blog (here), and I love the way this particular preppy combination came out with the oxford top, tweed skirt and riding boots. The cinched belt really does a great job of defining your waist, but the scarf can also add some unwanted volume to the chest area, especially if the scarf is a thick material. Is this a scarf trick you've ever tried?

Also - an update on post-holiday shopping. I've been to the mall/outlets 3 times since Christmas and each time I was not as successful in scoring major deals as in years past. I hardly bought anything, and several stores I visited were completely empty (!) like they were going out of business - overall there just wasn't much left to buy. Online has been a different story though. For example, both J.Crew and J.Crew Factory are offering an extra 40% off sale prices (code STYLE2015 and EXTRA40, respectively) until 1/7 and 1/6. I ordered a few things from both stores. The sequin top above is only $16 and the shoes are $35! I picked a few of my favorites to share today, but there are tons on both sites with deep discounts. Where have you found the best post-holiday deals this year?

There's a rule that says don't buy something if you can't envision how to wear it 3-4 different ways, but my vote is for a little blind faith sometimes. When I first bought these leopard flats I couldn't think of more than one way to wear them (with a gray sweater and black jeans!). After a few weeks and a little brainstorming, though, they seem to go with just about everything. They are the perfect finishing touch to this otherwise preppy outfit!

Happy New Year's Eve! We've got tickets to a big party tonight and I can't wait to get dressed up and ring in the new year. I'll be wearing my dress from last year (here), but wanted to share another NYE idea for colder weather in today's post. Let's start with the coat because it rocks. I've never seen anything quite like it and it's even prettier in person. You could wear it over a wedding dress in chilly weather, or go for one of the dress versions below (I saw the BCBG in person yesterday and almost tried it on). This white sequined dress is so pretty but isn't the most flattering cut on me. It's really short so tights were a must, but I know many of you could pull it off even if it's not quite right for me. (It's sold out but still available in pink.) Hope you have a wonderful time tonight however you are celebrating - Happy New Year!!!

I jumped the gun debuting my new 'do yesterday, because I totally forgot about these outfit photos I took last week. It took several tries before I found shades of green that worked together, but I love the harmonious result. This look is also making me crave more boyfriend cardigans in my closet. Inspiration: AmLul via Who What Wear

I'm so excited to debut my new ombre hair today! (It also made an appearance in our Instagram Christmas photos here.) I tried going ombre a couple weeks ago, but the ombre wasn't very obvious and it just looked blonde from the front (see left photo below). So I went back to my hairdresser and like the miracle worker that she is, she changed it! (If you're in Orlando, here's her contact info - she's fantastic!) I'm always weary about dark dye in my hair and wanted to keep as much of my natural hair as possible so she basically painted a stripe around the middle (and all the way up the streaks in front) with a glaze to darken it. After a couple years with dye-free hair, I was feeling bored and wanted some highlights, but my idea with ombre is that it's fun but doesn't have any root upkeep to save time and money. Excited to see how it looks as it grows out!

Post-Christmas Shopping

Yesterday I live tweeted my journey through my favorite shopping day of the year: the day after Christmas sales! These photos are from my Twitter feed and this is a recap of some of what I found.

My first stop the day after Christmas is always my favorite store: Banana Republic. In years past they've done 50% off sale until noon, but this year the promo was running all day, as well as online (through 12/28 - use code BRWINTER).

1. Lace top, $17 - This is pink lace top I featured on the blog here. it was only $17 in the store yesterday! (I've never seen the pink color online, but there were some in both stores I visited.)
2. Blue dress, $65 - Loved this dress but this size was all wrong for me - they only had Petites in the store.
3. Wrap top, $13 - This shirt was so soft and cozy, but it drew way too much attention to the stomach area for my liking.
4. Military shirt, $25 - Another soft and cozy shirt. I passed on it and ordered a similar shirt in silk online (pictured below) instead.

The reason the day after Christmas is so good for clothes shopping is that they discount the clothes AND run promos (whereas on Black Friday you'll only get promos). I couldn't help but check out some of the new arrivals though!

1. LOFT, $45 - This neoprene dress is a new arrival so it wasn't on sale. They were running a 50% off promo full price though (same online). I also tried on this snow leopard dress and really liked it.
2. White House Black Market, $59 - This dress I blogged about here is on sale now for $59. The silver one is now $89. Didn't purchase either yet.
3. Ann Taylor, $149 - This dress was full price, no promos yesterday but I had to tweet a picture because it was so cute! I'll be watching for when it goes it on sale!

Macy's had huge tables of Michael Kors purses on clearance - it was handbag heaven!

1. Coach, $225 with promo - This blush pink Coach bag is a new arrival but with the 25% off promotion in the store yesterday it was discounted. Waiting for spring and may have to get it then!
2. Michael Kors, $200 with promo - This burgundy MK bag was on the clearance table, plus an additional 20% off bringing it to $200. Sold out online but still in stores, or similar MK in the same color here

I didn't find a lot in person, but once I got home I hopped online to see what other sale items were up for grabs! Banana's sale section is so good right now and everything is an additional 50% off with code BRWINTER, ends 12/28.

1. Banana Top, $27 - They didn't have any of the green color in the stores I visited, so I ordered this online.
2. Banana Top, $31 - 100% silk and I love the military style.
3. Banana Necklace, $5 - This will go great layered with the other delicate necklaces I wear.
4. MK loafers, $54 - I haven't ordered these yet but I'm tempted because they are 50% off, and I'm hunting for a pair of cognac flats.
5. Old Navy sweatshirt, $27 - I saw this in the store but they didn't have my size. I want to try it with jeans and Sperrys.
5. ON yoga top, $17 - Old Navy has the cutest yoga gear, so I ordered a couple tanks and pants to try! I think if you watched the prices on these you could get them for even less!
6. Yoga pants, $27

Overall, in my experience it wasn't the best year for day after Christmas sales (in the past I've walked out of Banana with stacks of $15 silk tops and cashmere cardigans), BUT it was still pretty good. Starting now through the beginning of January is one of (if not the best) time of year to shop for great deals on clothes. As the holidays come to a close, retailers transition into spring clothing lines, so they will keep reducing prices lower and lower to get rid of the fall/winter clothes! Happy shopping and good luck scoring some awesome deals!

Merry Christmas!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Candy Canes

J's Everyday Fashion - Christmas Eve

That first photo makes me giggle so hard! I don't know if it's the look on Bella's face, or me channeling Where's Waldo, but it's super silly. I'm not planning to wear it with the hat, but red stripes = candy canes and it feels perfectly festive for the holidays. I won't be doing an outfit post tomorrow but I will be snapping a family photo to share. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas Eve!
