Today's Everyday Fashion: Hat Etiquette

White shirtdress, wool hat, gray leggings, cognac booties
White shirtdress with leggings
White shirt dress with Vince Camuto bag and Stella & Dot jewelry

I am so gaga for this hat. I want to wear it everywhere, but my gut is telling me that wool, wide brim hats won't work for every situation. If I lived in a big city, I would wear it all over the place - commuting, walking home, outdoor shopping. But my reality in the suburbs may call for some slightly different rules.

  1. Driving. I test drove this hat (literally) and I felt like my peripheral vision suffered, which is unsafe, so I took it off.
  2. Shopping. Can you wear one of these inside a grocery store? Ikea? the mall? When it's dark outside or only in the daytime? I would play this one by ear.
  3. Meals. Is it bad etiquette to wear a hat during a meal? (Or even just cumbersome?) I think it depends on the restaurant, the weather, your mood, how bad your hat head is. Also play by ear.
  4. Meetings. Similar to sunglasses, wearing a hat this big felt funny when meeting someone new, like I was hiding my face under a shadow, so I removed it.
  5. Outside. This is the one occasion I think for sure works. These types of hats keep the sun out of your eyes and in general they feel right at home outdoors. Even meals, when dining al fresco.

What are your experiences with wearing hats? When do you take them off and leave them on?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Copycat

Inspiration: J.Crew Factory

Inspiration: J.Crew Factory

Red plaid top, red sweater and ivory jeans

This may come as no surprise, but I have absolutely no shame in re-creating an outfit I like. More often than not my outfits wind up being loose interpretations rather than exact copies of my inspiration photos, but today's look is pretty close to a carbon copy. I even tied my sweater slightly off to the side like the catalog photo, just to be cheeky. I drew the line at leaning to right in my photo. ;-)

Some may (and have) called this being a copycat, but I think of it as being resourceful and saving time and money, and I simply don't accept that shame. I think it's similar to using a recipe to cook. You haven't forsaken your own personal style because you got the recipe from someone else (unless, I suppose, you forced yourself to wear or eat something just because someone else did). Just because it existed on someone else's body or plate, does not make it any less your personal style. And let's face it, most likely someone has worn it at some point before you, maybe even in a different decade. Perfect strangers simultaneously come up with the same idea at the same time more often than you may think. Doesn't make it not "you."

So maybe you're not a master chef and creating the recipes, but I don't think that's the goal for many of us. We call chefs "stylists" in the fashion world, and that's their job. But I know at least for me my aspirations lie in simply being a cook and being able to dress myself in the morning, so copying recipes is a great resource. And of course this idea of copying is exactly why I blog - because I want you to freely copy outfits too. Both using inspiration photos you find on your own, or recreating what you see here.

Have you ever hesitated or felt silly about copying an outfit (here or elsewhere)? Do you think copying shame has grown weaker with the rise of DIY culture and sites like Pinterest? What are your views on copycat fashion?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Scandal Inspired

Scandal for the Limited coats

Coat   /   Pants   /  Coat

It seems like every other week a retailer does a collaboration with a designer, celebrity or TV show. I don't cover every launch because there are so many of them, and I am a little wary that an exciting "name" can make the clothes seem cooler than they really are. The Scandal Collection at the Limited though? So stinking cute I can't handle it. (Note: I was not asked to write about or compensated to write about it.)  I loved it when I saw it online initially, and even more so when I tried it on. This is one collaboration I really wanted to share.

Is there something unique/special about this line compared to the rest of the clothes at Limited? My answer is yes: they really paid attention to every detail, and the overall aesthetics are some of my favorite pieces I've ever seen at the Limited. With that comes a price, though. Items are expensive for the Limited and so far they haven't offered any coupons that are valid on the collection.

1. My first set of photos above show two coats I tried on. The gray plaid cape was one of my favorites online, but in person I found it a bit stiff to navigate. Maybe I just need some practice with capes, because I certainly loved the gray plaid fabric. And the pink coat was fabulous - it's not as bright pink in person as it looks online, and I think the wrap style is so chic.

Scandal for the Limited office outfit

Jacket   /   Top   /   Pants

2. I loved these three pieces together. The jacket is gorgeous and with a little ironing you can wear it open like I'm showing. This top is so pretty and comes in three colors; this would be a staple for me if I worked in an office. The pants were a pretty color but I preferred the Liv fit (below) for my body type.

My top picks: Scandal for the Limited

Dress   /   Coat   /   Top   /   Pants

3. I was most excited to try on this dress. It looks too short for the office on the model but it was longer on me (I'm 5'7") so I felt very appropriate. The pink color was a little lighter in person than I was expecting, and my only complaint is that you can slightly see the layers through the dress along the right side. I wish it would lay more flat.

The outfit on the right I wanted to buy immediately and walk out of the store in it! That's the same pink coat worn open, and the same tie shirt in the blush color. The pants are more ivory than bright white like they appear on the website, and the fit was awesome. I'm on my toes in the picture, they would be the perfect length with a nice pump.

Scandal for the Limited office outfit

Jacket   /   Top   /   Pants

4. Last but not least, this is another outfit with the Liv pant, this time in a blush pink color (they look brown in my photo but they are more of a pink like you see on the website). This outfit felt crisp and modern and totally professional.

Overall this line was a huge win in my book. I don't have a ton of use for office clothes in my world, but I will be sale and coupon stalking regardless. Two thumbs up! Have you tried any of the Scandal clothing line yet? What was your experience? You can shop the entire line here.

I love this inspiration photo, it makes me want to go out and buy a yellow coat! Concert tee, gray jeans, waterfall cardigan and suede boots

It's officially boots season! It's that time of year where I take inventory of my boot collection and figure out which color or shape (if any) to add to my closet next. I went for taupe suede with a low heel, and I love the side fringe on the pair I'm wearing. I couldn't wait to recreate Hayden Panettiere's airport outfit with them! I got the boots from Sole Society - a brand/store I've reviewed several times here on the blog. I think they are great resource for budget shoppers. They are a step up from super budget brands in terms of quality (a mix of real and faux leather), but are still affordable with most items in the $40-120 range. Check out my top picks for fall below. Today's Everyday Fashion: 6 Ideas for Layering Dresses

6 Ideas for Layering Dresses

Today's post is inspired by a recent reader request via Facebook: "Though I own a lot of dresses, I keep wearing them in rather uninspired ways, changing only the shoes and jewelry. Could you do a series on layering dresses?"

I started thinking about my closet and what new creative combinations I might find, as well as past posts that featured dress layering. Here are 6 examples of layering a dress:

1. Wear a collared shirt underneath
To make this trick work, the shirt underneath should be a thin material, and the dress should be a thicker material to conceal the shirt. With this first example, the fit and color are so harmonious, the top almost looks like it's part of the dress.

Layer a collared shirt under a dress

In this second example I like the color combo. Adding a printed blouse under your LBD could be a fun way to add a new spin. I personally think the ruffles on this particular dress are a bit too busy though. It would work well with a plain black sheath.

Wear a dress as a skirt: layer a sweater and jacket over it

2. Wear a dress as a skirt

I layered a sweater and a jacket over this striped dress for a whole new look. Crew neck sweaters are easy to do this with since they conceal more, and jackets help tie the pieces together and aid with keeping the sweater in place.

This second example was one of my most popular outfits in 2012. I like the fullness of the skirt paired with a more fitted sweater. You can see the challenge of getting the sweater to stay in place though. Try folding the bottom under, or stick to sweaters with a shorter or cropped fit.

3. Wear a dress as a top

In this trick, I layered a too-short dress under a pencil skirt to make it work appropriate. A few factors needed to make this one work: the thinner the dress the better, and your skirt will need some extra wiggle room, plus thick enough material to conceal the dress.

Last but not least, another example of wearing a tunic/dress under a skirt. This trick works especially well with full and pleated skirts!

What are your favorite ways to get more mileage out of your dresses?

Olive sweater with black shorts

I like mixing the unexpected, which is what initially drew me to today's inspiration photo. A heavy sweater paired with bare legs, and leather paired with casual sneakers. I had similar colors in my closet, so I gave it a try. I'm not 100% convinced that either outfit idea works for practical purposes, however, since there isn't much weather conducive to a heavy sweater with bare legs. If I ever wake up to such weather... I might just throw this outfit on!

I originally had on dark brown boots like my inspiration photo, but they looked funny on me. I went with my gut and switched to cognac boots and purse. Once I had the two photos side-by-side I noticed something: her boots and purse match her hair, and my boots and purse match mine! I can't say I've ever noticed my hair color in an outfit before, but there are plenty of articles that speak to the importance of dressing your "colors." Have you ever had your colors done, or noticed an outfit did or didn't go with your hair?

Leggings for adults: the dos and don'ts

I've never really worn leggings. I will happily wear skinny bottoms, but I prefer a thick structured denim or cotton and not as much stretch in my pants. This fall it feels like opposite day though, because leggings have never seemed more appealing to me. Which leads me to wonder: how can you wear them without looking like a preteen? And what is appropriate? I come from the camp that leggings aren't pants so I wouldn't show my bum completely, but your top also doesn't need to be quite as long as a dress. (I think ideally this top should be 1-3 inches longer for this look). As for feeling grown-up, a silk button down tunic fits the bill, like the one I'm showing today and more examples below. You could even order tops like the Ann Taylor version below in "Tall" to achieve more of a tunic look. Tell me - do you wear leggings? What are you best tips for keeping them appropriate and grown-up?

Today's post is a real life moment captured while tidying the yard yesterday. I mentioned that I had moved several times this summer, and after a year of shopping, plenty of real estate heart break and living out of suitcases for 5 months... I can now call this little piece of paradise mine. The backyard is my new backdrop for outfit photos, my writer's retreat and my place to connect spiritually. I spend a lot of time with JJ canoeing in the lake, sitting on the dock and of course - doing lots of yard work! That's exactly what I was up to yesterday in this outfit. The hat keeps the sun out of my eyes, the wellies protect my feet from the wet grass and endless bug bites, and overall it's my ideal uniform. And now I virtually invite you to enjoy an iced tea with me on the porch; welcome to a little tour of the back yard!

This dress and blazer seem like they were made for each other, but the question is: which purse? My favorite is the middle one, but I'll let you guys be the judge. Purse three is my recent $112 Vince Camuto budget find (also here). In my head this yellow-cognac color was going to be great with my wardrobe but I'm finding it doesn't quite "go." Purses one and two are very different colors but both "go" with these cognac pumps. I have a lot of shoes this color so for purse three not to work is a total bummer! Somebody get me a brown hat, stat! I love the shape of the one I'm wearing in today's photos, but the black looks a bit harsh with the colors in this outfit. So for now this will serve as my inspiration for acquiring a brown hat this fall. I really want #1 below but it was temporarily out of stock when I placed my Macy's order. Kohl's ELLE and Elie Tahari lines

Dress  /  Trench  /  Dress /  Dress

I headed to Kohl's last night to check out two recent clothing line launches - Elie Tahari for DesigNation, and the ELLE Limited Edition Runway Collection. (My friends at ShopStyle asked me to share both lines on the blog, but all ideas for this post, opinions and editorial decisions are solely my own.) I wanted to see the lines in person before sharing them with you guys so here's what I found:

  • First up, the two ELLE dresses above - cobalt and black and white. I loved the overall fit, ruffles on the shoulders and pockets. The cobalt dress had a slightly faded look to it; I liked the vibrant black and white fabric better.
  • The ELLE trench with black piping is a soft material with an empire waist. I have the belt tied behind me in the photo. I really like this style, it reminds me of my trench with black sleeves that I wear to death and it looked great paired with the dress.
  • Next up is an Elie Tahari dress. The mesh panels on the shoulders are very sexy - who knew showing just a sliver of skin could be so provocative? The fit was fabulous on this dress, which made it look a lot more expensive than it is.
Kohl's Elie Tahari for DesigNation

Sweater  /  Leggings  /  Top  /  Pants  /  Jacket  /  Dress

  • You can master layering in one step with this two-in-one Elie Tahari top. The print on the shirt is upside down skyscrapers. The pants/leggings (also Elie Tahari) are a soft scuba material with an elastic waistband - thicker than traditional leggings and ridiculously comfy.
  • I think this graphic Elie Tahari top would look great with slimmer bottoms like black skinny jeans. The pants were a size too big for me, but I loved them so much. You could wear them around the house as sweatpants, or you could dress them up with heels, especially with loose pants being a big trend right now. Talk about versatile!
  • The Elie Tahari motorcycle jacket is a lightweight suede material and would look good tossed over just about anything. The floral dress is by Vera Wang and I immediately thought of it for an upcoming vacation.

Have you seen these two lines at Kohl's? What was your experience? Which items do you like the most? Check out more favorites I found online, below!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Myths of Outlet Shopping

Inspiration: J.Crew

Inspiration: J.Crew

Camel blazer, distressed jeans and leopard pumps

I tweeted this article "The Myth of the Maxxinista" about a month ago and wanted to share it here, too. It's a myth I've talked about often on the blog. The article states that 85% of merchandise in outlets is made specifically for the outlets - meaning, you aren't getting a discount or markdown on regular brand name items, but rather a lower-quality item made to sell at a lower price. Banana Republic, Gap, J.Crew outlets are a few examples. Even TJ Maxx and stores like Nordstrom Rack or Saks Off Fifth do it, although at those stores you'll find brand name discounts mixed in, too.

What does this mean for us bargain hunters? I don't think it means boycotting the outlets, but rather it means being careful shoppers. When we shop we often experience brand name blindness. When we see brands we associate with quality like J.Crew, we instantly assume "this is a great item!" outlet or not. Or the opposite - we write off stores like H&M or the outlets altogether, because "that place is so cheap, yuck!" We experience brand-blindness based on advertising, prices, peer reviews, or a singular personal experience. I think instead of focusing on the brand so much though, we should commit to putting on our blinders a little and evaluating each individual piece of clothing. Forget the brand for a moment and ask, "How does the fabric feel? What is the construction like?" (See this DailyWorth article on "How to Identify Quality Clothing" for more ways to evaluate.) I've had non-outlet J.Crew items completely fall apart after one wear. And I've purchased 100% leather items at H&M that lasted a decade. Brand equity only goes so far in my book. You probably wouldn't like a bad song just because your favorite artist sings it, and you shouldn't be willing to buy every top just because it comes from your favorite clothing brand, outlet or not.

Which brings me to today's outfit. I recently ordered this camel blazer from J.Crew Factory using a coupon code. I'm looking for a camel blazer I'll wear and love for many years, so part of me hesitated to buy a staple piece like this from an outlet. Just because it's J.Crew brand, I'm not going to assume it's high quality. At the same time, just because it's from the outlet, I'm not going to assume it's *not* quality. Instead I'm going to evaluate the blazer with little thought about the brand, in either direction. Overall I really like the fit and fabric, but the buttons seem a little loose. Aesthetics play a role as well, and evaluating whether I'll actually wear it is important to me. I may opt for a slightly lower quality item at times, because I like the overall look more and wouldn't want a higher quality item that would just sit in my closet. I'm planning to do an in-person comparison of the quality and aesthetics of the Banana Republic blazer below before making a final decision (if I track down a coupon I should be able to get the Banana version for a similar price).

What brands are you most loyal to or stay away from? Or what stores have surprised you - either by finding quality in a lower-end store, or items from a trusted brand that didn't hold up to your expectations?

This is my perfect outfit lately. I'm excited for fall weather and it's finally chilly enough some nights to wear a light sweater. My "mood" is definitely affecting my purchasing decisions, because I couldn't buy these Sperrys fast enough in Macy's sale last week. They are so cushiony and I like how the spiraled cognac laces give them a little extra flair over regular canvas sneakers. Are you craving cozy knits this fall? Which one is your favorite below?

Banana Republic navy dress

Navy and black: the ultimate no-no in some fashion books. In my world though, navy and black can do no wrong and the two make quite the chic pairing. This the the navy dress I bought recently and while I originally envisioned it with something preppy like a plaid blazer, cognac riding boots or nude pumps, this slightly more rock-n-roll take thanks to my inspiration photo gives me another way to wear it. Would you ever wear navy and black together?
