Today's Everyday Fashion: Giveaway with HSN

HSN dress and purse
HSN cocoon dress with HSN purse
HSN leopard dress

Dress: Naeem Khan c/o HSN
Purse: Hal Rubenstein c/o HSN

As promised, I’m back with a second post showcasing HSN's fabulous fall fashion. (See post one here.) Today I’m rocking a Naeem Khan dress with crinkle fabric and cocoon shape. It comes in three colors, plus and regular sizes, and brings a whole new meaning to being comfortable. I don’t think I’ve ever tried on a dress that was this easy to wear and yet polished at the same time!

I’m also holding a Hal Rubenstein two-toned purse. It combines two trends with the satchel shape and colorblocking both being hot for fall. The craftsmanship is impeccable, it comes with a long strap as well as the short strap, and it has plenty of room for travel or for everyday use. The best part though? I’m giving this bag away to one lucky reader, a $368 retail value! There will be three winners total, because I’m also giving away two HSN necklaces (pictured below), and each winner will take home one prize each (prizes will be randomly assigned to the winners). To enter the giveaway, follow the instructions in the Rafflecopter box below.

You can check out HSN's fashion show every Thursday night at 9pm EST (on the HSN channel), or shop more of their great fall fashion on their website here. Which HSN item would you be most excited to win?

Today’s post is brought to you by HSN. All opinions are my own. Thanks for reading and entering!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Tiered Dress

H&M chiffon tiered dress

H&M dark gray boho dress
H&M dress with Stella & Dot jewlery

To really complete this look, I need a half-up messy braid in my hair. I love the bohemian-meets-lingerie vibe, it reminds me of so many Free People dresses I love (see options below, all but one are Free People brand). I also love the versatility of this dress. You could wear it with flat sandals to a festival, with a heels to a wedding (similar to how I've styled it), or with boots and tights in the winter with the ruffled hem peeking out below your coat.  Would you wear this style of dress?

I can't seem to kick this illness. I've been sick (sore throat/fever) for going on 7 weeks; it feels a lot like mono. I missed 4 days of posts last month and I'm afraid I'm struggling again with keeping up. One thing I have been able to do this week is online browsing, so today I'm sharing some coats & boots under $100 to kick off the official start of fall.

First up are some coat favorites. Not surprisingly, most are from H&M. When I lived in Boston I bought almost all my spring/fall coats there. Not the same as winter coats, of course, which is a time in Boston when fashion is purely about survival. My winter coat looked like I wrapped my entire body in a down comforter (not so cute), but thankfully spring/fall allowed for cute coats like the ones pictured above. I also found some great deals on boots under $100, below. What types of coats and/or boots are on your shopping wish list for fall?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Budget Update

J. Crew  /  Forever 21  /  Forever 21  /  Ann Taylor
BR Outlet  /  TJ Maxx  /  J.Crew Factory  /  J.Crew Factory

Here's everything I bought since my last budget post in July! These items should look familiar - they've all been featured in outfit posts. :-)

1. J.Crew, $35 - One of my favorite scores of all time. I walked into the store and it was marked down to $35, no coupon. (At least one FB reader said they got it for less than I did though, lucky!) It's still $119 on the website.
2. Forever 21, $23 - My new favorite swim cover-up, that I may also try to wear as a shirt thanks to your suggestions.
3. Forever 21, $24 - Looks like it came from a boutique, but half the price. Score!
4. Ann Taylor, $18 - I got this awesome price with a coupon code online. I wasn't sure how much I'd wear these but I'm already finding them a great addition to my closet!
5. BR Outlet, $10 - The kind of tank top you'll find me wearing around the house or to run errands.
6. TJ Maxx, $13 - A boho print I couldn't pass up.
7. J.Crew Factory, $24 - J.Crew Factory slayed me with their adorable shorts this summer. I ordered these online with a coupon code.
8. J.Crew Factory, $24 - More cute shorts from the same online order.

Banana Republic  /  H&M  /  H&M
Vince Camuto  /  Michael Kors

Here's everything I bought on my impromptu shopping trip yesterday. None of these have been featured on the blog yet. 99% sure I'm keeping everything but there's always a chance something will go back!

1. Banana dress, $30 - All sale items were 50% off in the store yesterday, so it was marked down to $50. Then I used a $20 reward that was about to expire, to bring the price to $30.
2. H&M dress, $36 - I used a 10% off coupon I found in the dressing room (I texted to sign up for the newsletter and they texted the coupon back). They had this dress paired with a military jacket and boots on the mannequin and I loved it. I also may try it with fancy shoes for a wedding.
3. H&M top, $9 - Also 10% off. This top has a long/loose fit on the bottom and I can see tons of layering potential with it this fall.
4. Vince Camuto, $112 - A new cognac purse! The hunt finally ends!! Purchased at Macy's but they offered to price match the Vince Camuto website. This price is a steal with the extra 25% off coupon code FRIENDS right now.
5. Michael Kors wristlet, $38 - Used the rest of my c/o ShopStyle gift card to buy this, with the VIP discount for 20% off (code VIP). It was time to replace my current wallet/wristlet from Christmas 5 years ago.

My clothing budget is $250 per month. I treat it like an allowance, so on the first of each month I deposit that $250 into an account. I currently have a balance of $666 in unspent clothing budget for the year. There are many different ways to budget, for my best tips and tricks see "How to Set a Clothing Budget."

Today's Everyday Fashion: Macy's VIP Sale

Cobalt shirtdress with Vince Camuto booties
Leather sleeve trench with cobalt dress
Alfani cobalt shirtdress on sale

I'm not very skilled at finding deals at department stores. It seems like whenever I do find a coupon, it excludes the brand I'm hoping to buy and I wind up frustrated! That's why I was very excited to learn about Macy's VIP sale (online only, ends 9/21). With code VIP you get 20% off pretty much anything (some exclusions apply, but not many!), and that's an extra 20% if the item is already on sale. I picked up this cobalt dress in-store yesterday (did not receive an extra 20% since the promo is only good online but it was on clearance). I tried on a bunch of the options below though, which are eligible. The Sperry's are super-comfy and the Rachel Roy v-neck tunic is to die for in person. I found so many cute things it's going to be hard to narrow down what I want to order with the coupon! Check out my favorites below, and if you have secrets for saving money at department stores, please spill!

Navy striped top with navy pencil skirt for fall

I would totally wear this inspiration photo for fall. (Perhaps with a little less sock showing?) I decided to use the same color scheme to achieve the feeling of fall while it's still hot and humid here in FL. The result is two ways to wear the same "idea" - pea green, navy and stripes with cognac shoes - depending on the occasion and/or climate. Would you wear this color combo for fall?

This Thursday be sure to join us for a Twitter party 8:30-10:30pm EST, where I and a handful of bloggers will be dishing out beauty tips and giving away prizes. One of the things I'm most looking forward to about fall fashion: cobalt! I'm pairing it now with peach jeans for the end of summer. (Not sure I'd keep the python shoes, a simple nude shoe would be cute.) And this fall I'm planning to pair it with black, camel, leopard, or red!

Thank you J.Crew for always having the most creative color combinations in your catalogs! They make great inspiration for re-creating. Last but not least, when I was shopping F21 last week I knew this top seemed familiar! I like the button front shape of Beyonce's more, but the print is spot on. I'd pair it with denim and light turquoise jewelry like she did, or with a navy pencil skirt for work.

Old Navy dog sweater with striped skirt and red accessories

I can't wait to wear this outfit when the weather cools down here in Florida! I've posted several times with this sweater (here and here) but I think this look is my favorite so far. (I've got on this Kohl's bra to counteract the slight sheerness of the fabric you can see in those posts.) Novelty sweaters have been popular for a couple years now, but there are still lots to choose from in stores. Is this a clothing item you already wear or would try?

All my life I was a v-neck girl. But then a few years ago I discovered the layering affect you could create with a crewneck top and a statement necklace and I was hooked. Nordstrom cut out top and faux leather skirt

The main part of my outfit - top, skirt and necklace - looks so much like the inspiration photo! I think the shoes/purse could be substituted for lots of different options that could possibly be cuter though, like a black clutch, black shoes, or both. Also, I am a huge fan of cut out shirts, because even under a jacket in the winter you can still see the part that makes them fun. (Versus something with a ruffle shoulder, for example, being covered with a jacket!) How would you accessorize today's look?

I went through old magazines recently and pulled out some pages to save for inspiration. I loved the overall look of this page, but the bottom right corner especially caught my eye. It immediately reminded me of this top and these shorts together. It's busy, it's loud but it's also not your average shorts and t-shirt, which I love. Sometimes it's fun to go bold!

In shopping news, I couldn't stop drooling over the Forever 21 skirt from yesterday's post, which lead to more shopping and eventually placing an order. It's always a gamble ordering online but I haven't shopped in ages and wound up getting two jackets, both skirts and two tops to try. Fingers crossed they are as cute in person when they arrive!

******

And last but not least. I knew I’d soon be given a chance to put into practice my “Pushing Through the Darkness” post. I was, and I crashed and burned! (Cheers to being human, ya'll.) So I’m making some changes. I’ve had no restrictions on comments for the past two years but I took the offending comments down, and as of yesterday afternoon, comments now go through moderation before they are published. My policy is pretty simple, as long as the comments are about fashion, it’s good. Anything that is unnecessarily personal and non-constructive won’t make it through. My goal is to keep this site the happy and upbeat place that it should be!!

Moderation does come with some concerns though. There is always that darn gray area and there's plenty of room for error. So another possible option that a reader suggested is closing down comments altogether. The downside to that option is simply not wanting to cut off that line of communication with you guys. It feels like letting the bad apples win when there are so many more good apples. So for now, moderation on comments but I’m open to suggestions for the future. If you have thoughts or preferences on either option please let me know! xoxo, J.

Olivia and I are going tit for tat in a battle of polka dots today. Our tops are similar. I see her polka dot shoes and switch to a polka skirt with accordion pleats, and raise it one statement necklace. I love the end result of both, but I'm especially digging the elastic waistband in my ensemble because being this comfy feels amazing. Check out more accordion pleats to choose from below. HSN dress, necklace and shoes

Dress: Hal Rubenstein c/o HSN
Necklace: RK by Ranjana Khan c/o HSN
Shoes: Vince Camuto c/o HSN

I love finding new places to shop, so I was really excited to learn about HSN's website packed to the gills with fabulous fall fashion! I was pleasantly surprised to find top brands like BCBG, Jessica Simpson, Steve Madden, Vince Camuto as well as HSN exclusives like G by Giuliana Rancic (I love her and the clothes are cute)! And most items come in both regular and plus sizes.

I had a shopping heyday putting together a collage of some of my favorites below. I'm also giving an HSN dress, necklace and shooties a try in my photos above. The fabulous Vince Camuto shooties are totally stealing the show for me, but the dress and necklace are certainly statement makers on their own, too. The Hal Rubenstein dress is two pieces - the ruched waist comes off, or you can wear the "buckle" in the front (as shown on model on the website). (Note: I would size up on the dress 1-2 sizes than what I'm wearing here.) I'm bigger on the bottom, but the volume on the top of this dress is giving me the appearance of an hourglass shape, or almost an inverted triangle, when you add the necklace. The RK by Ranjana Khan necklace is an array of gold fringe attached to a leather v-shape, and it went fast - only a few left on the website.

You can check out HSN's fashion show every Thursday night at 9pm EST (on the HSN channel), to see the latest styles in action and get access to exclusive deals. And stay tuned for another HSN post here later this fall. Have you ever shopped for fashion at HSN? Which items are your favorite in today's post?

Chambray shirt worn open with camel tee

I am all about cardigans, but I hardly ever think to wear my button front shirts open like this.  I loved the look of the inspiration photo though, so I gave it a try with similar colors I already had in my closet. The end result feels a lot like I'm wearing a hoodie - it's that comfortable, but a bit more sophisticated than actual workout gear. Navy blazer with distressed jeans and lace-up heels

Navy blazers, in any variation, are my absolute favorite. I decided to invest in this one approx. seven years ago, and have bought several other navy jackets and blazers since. I am digging my inspiration's loose fitting boyfriend version, and just may have to pick one up this fall (that's one variation I don't own yet!). In the meantime, I used my shrunken schoolboy blazer with a white tee and distressed jeans to create a similar look. I love the mix of simplicity and textured details and can't wait to wear it in a couple months when the weather cools down. Anyone else a navy blazer fanatic?

I've had this catalog photo saved for awhile because I absolutely adore her stripes and florals combo. This top is the prettiest blush pink color, the photos don't really do it justice. I bought it back when I first started my clothing budget seven years ago, and was testing the waters on "spending more for what you really want." I still believe in that principle, just don't think I would spend $50 on a t-shirt again! Learning what to buy and what's a good investment is something I've been trying to perfect for years and am still learning as I go. Have you ever made a purchase and questioned why you spent that much later?

Also - I am crazy for these new engravable necklaces - they are cute, sentimental, and make a great gift.
