Today's Everyday Fashion: The White Blazer

Inspiration: J.Crew

I stalked this blazer for months before finally buying it! I got it for 40% off, but it was still an investment. A white blazer is a staple that I will love until the end of time, and the shape and buttons on this particular one made it extra special and totally worth the large chunk of budget. For my first outfit with it, I paired it with an old striped top and dressy navy shorts. I think the options are endless though, especially as the season's change, when you want a jacket but the sun is shining. Would you consider a white blazer to be a staple piece in your closet?

The only thing better than wearing a new shirt? Finding another way to wear it so you can wear it again! I first wore this striped ruffle shirt on the blog here and below. For today's look, I went with denim, a cognac purse and shoes, inspired by the magazine photo. Now I have two ways to wear and enjoy this shirt!

J's Everyday Fashion Turns 6

J.Crew stripe ruffle sleeve top

J's Everyday Fashion turns 6 years old today! This birthday snuck up on me. I wish I had something grand planned, like last year's 7-day cruise giveaway. (Don't know that I can ever top that.) But for this year a thank you will have to suffice for now. A thank you because none of this would exist without you. I know you are out there somewhere floating in the interwebs. Most of the time I can't see you or hear you, but I love the interaction we occasionally have online, and I love meeting you in person when we bump into each other. With this thanks I can offer you a (giggle worthy) photo from my very first post on J's Everyday Fashion, below. Plus an outfit with a cute new ruffle sleeve shirt above (which is my usual offering - shopping tips and outfit ideas that I hope you can use and apply to your own closet). And also a promise of some exciting new things coming soon.

And while 6 years is certainly a fun milestone to celebrate, it's not as glamorous as it may seem. I often describe success as "a million tiny steps that feel like you are going absolutely nowhere. Then one day you look behind you and you can't believe the mountain you just climbed." I do not spend much time, if at all, admiring the mountains. I will take a few moments today to stop and look around. But then it's right back to trudging along, one foot after another.

Thank you so much for 6 years!! And cheers to many more.

I took a style quiz recently and this was my favorite outfit from all the options. I really appreciate the simplicity of her look, but when I had the outfit on my body it felt like so much white and that it needed something else. If I set the purse down, then there would be no color at all. So I added a big necklace and earrings - which is my jam, I like making things more colorful and jazzing things up!

ps. These shoes are cute but they are really uncomfortable so I don't recommend them. I was trying to get the "look for less" based on the styles I've been seeing everywhere (below) but sometimes when things seem too good to be true (they were $15) they really are!

Another way to wear this shirt - sleeves up!

Lace up espadrilles are all the rage right now, and I couldn't be happier. Because not only are they adorable, they are also really practical and comfortable. I wore this look (minus the hat) on Saturday. I like it with a hat for a daytime activity, although, I think the brim on this particular hat is too big on me. (Planning to stop by Target to check out this option tomorrow!) While wearing this shirt on Saturday I also discovered that you can wear it two different ways - with the sleeves up, or off the shoulder. Score!

Poolside Style with ModCloth

It’s a pool party today with ModCloth, because they are the masters of poolside fun! With tons of unique swim styles, in a wide range of extended sizes for all body shapes, many items exclusive to ModCloth, and obtainable prices – they truly have something for just about everyone.

This is my first time trying a high-waist style swimsuit and I must say that I’ve never felt so stylish at the pool before in my life! Between the mint color, polka dots and adventurous shape, it feels really festive and fun. For a swim cover up, I chose an off shoulder striped dress (second picture above). It goes great with a straw Panama hat and the neutral stripes will pair well with any color swimsuit.

ModCloth also has an amazing selection of pool and beach accessories, like the inflatable pineapple and colorful beach towel in today’s post, as well as sunglasses, hats, and bags. I rounded up some more of my favorites from ModCloth’s swimwear section below

What’s your favorite swimsuit shape? Have you ever tried a high-waisted style?

Under $20 Style at Ross

dress from Ross, $14.99
purse from Ross, $22 (last year)

dress from Ross, $11.99

dress from Ross, $12.99

All three dresses in today’s post are under $20! I only visited one Ross store on this shopping trip, tried on handful of dresses (check out the fitting room photos below) and spent less than 30 minutes. I love it when bargain hunting is this good and so easy!

The first printed maxi dress is probably my favorite. The quality of the material is great – it’s soft and doesn’t wrinkle, and the pattern is really cute. The middle dress (tie dye) is a great tunic length that would also work over jeans or leggings in the fall. And the last dress (blue embroidery) would make a great swim cover up. I’ve been eyeing a much more expensive option so I love that this one is under $20 at Ross!

J's Everyday Fashion clothing collection debut

Also – some exciting news! My clothing collection debuts in just a few days!! We’re giving email subscribers a 2-day head start to shop, so be sure you are signed up here. The launch will include 14 items, in limited quantities, mostly in the price range $40-60. More items will roll out later this summer, and email subscribers will always get a head start!

So how did this all come about? A couple months ago, I traveled to Market in Atlanta with the owners of a boutique. They gave me total freedom to pick out my ideal summer wardrobe from the overwhelming (!) number of wholesale companies that stock department stores and boutiques across the country. Everything will have the “J’s Everyday Fashion” tag attached – the back of the tag is pictured above.

It’s been really fun working on this project and I hope you will enjoy the end result! These are things I’ll be wearing all summer long, and I hope you love them, too. I will reveal the name of the boutique and post pictures publicly starting next week. In the meantime though, be sure to sign up for emails so you have the opportunity to shop first!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Blush Pink Off Shoulder

This shirt is as adorable as I'd hoped it would be in person! Unfortunately, it's also a bit high maintenance though. The sleeves are held on by snaps, but they won't stay snapped, so the sleeves are totally separate on my arm. The hanger tags also have a habit of sneaking up and out (I am considering removing them, but then I can't hang the shirt up). It sounds like a lot (wanted to give my full and honest review!) but it's so darn cute with the blush pink + off shoulder + ruffle sleeve combo that I may be willing to cut those tags out and wear the separated sleeves with confidence! What would you choose - is ease of use more or less important than aesthetics?

InStyle Spring Capsule Collection for Keaton Row

I’m all about making getting dressed fast and easy – and Keaton Row does just that! It’s a premier online styling service. They don’t send you things in the mail that you may or may not like. Instead, they put together outfits based on your personal style and let you make all the shopping decisions. It’s easy and free – buy any item through Keaton Row, and continue to get their free styling services for another 3 months!

My personal experience with Keaton Row is two-fold. First, I got to sample a few items from InStyle’s Spring Capsule Collection. My black tank top, tassel earrings, and sculptural gold cuff in today’s outfit all come from the magazine’s curated collection. A black sleeveless blouse is a great staple to any wardrobe, a gold cuff makes a statement and yet goes with everything, and fringe is huge for spring, so the earrings are on-trend. When you sign up for Keaton Row you’ll have the opportunity to shop and browse all of InStyle’s picks for spring. (And let me tell you, they have great taste!)

I also experienced Keaton Row by signing up online, taking the style survey and talking to one of their Stylists. The four outfit ideas she put together for me completely blew me away – see pictures below. I didn’t tell her about my blog or any of my preferences outside of the survey and she nailed it! I immediately purchased the off shoulder pink top and can’t wait for it to arrive in the mail.

Go ahead and sign up for Keaton Row to try it yourself!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Something Old

Wearing something old from your closet may not always feel like the most glamorous option. There's a lot of messaging out there that tells us everything has to be new. But I think it's definitely an option you should feel good about. I've had this skirt for approx. 6 years (and the purse for 4), and pairing it with a top and shoes that are less than a year old gives it a whole new spin. I'd argue that in some cases, the old is even more glamorous!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Black, Brown & Straw

Inspiration: Sincerely Jules via Popsugar

One of my favorite ways to wear black is by pairing it with cognac brown. It's a tried and true trick I've repeated again and again. Add in straw details, though, and it makes it feel so fresh for spring! I got the idea for the foundation of the outfit, chambray top with black jeans, from my inspiration photo. I hope by sharing my outfit here it will inspired you to give it a try, too. It's such a fun and easy idea and perfect for a cool spring day!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Work Attire

Inspiration: GC Images via WhoWhatWear

My style has changed a lot over the years. When I first started blogging I wore tons of pencil skirts and traditional work attire, because I was in a corporate job. But after I lost my job and couldn't find another one, I turned to blogging full-time (a true lemonade from lemons story!) which calls for a much different dress code. I may not need traditional work clothes as much today, but I have a few pieces on hand, like this white dress. It's a blank canvas that can be worn conservatively or made trendy, like by adding a patterned jacket and red accessories, inspired by Jamie Chung's outfit. I also wouldn't mind adding a pink pencil skirt to my "work" closet, so I rounded up some options below! Is your wardrobe more focused on work or fun?

There's a good chance you'll see these fabulous budget finds in outfit posts soon! We were rained out taking pictures yesterday, so I put together a collage of what's currently in my shopping cart instead. Plenty of pool cover ups, dreamy ruffles and embellishments, and breezy dresses for spring, all under $120. Which items are your top pick and would you like to see and/or wear?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Gingham with Ruffles

Gingham is having a moment this year! And combining the preppy print with ruffles pretty much turns me into the emjoi with hearts for eyes. This shirt is the second (and final) item in my recent Zara order. It's an instant statement maker that you can throw on with just about anything. I can see it working with black trousers or a pencil skirt for work, but with my current sneaker obsession I decided to go down the casual road first.  Are you a fan of gingham for spring/summer?

That moment when you finally buy a brand that you've loved for years and never felt like you could afford. My budget hasn't changed. But after posting about loving Mara Hoffman a month ago, I started thinking... why not afford this brand? It may take a chunk of my budget. But if I know that I will wear this maxi dress way more often because I love it so much more than other dresses, then it makes sense! I did due diligence and waited until the price was as low as possible - using an old trick where I keep adding dresses to my cart until I figure out how many are left in stock. I use the # in stock to determine whether to wait or pull the trigger. In this case there were 6 left so I waited until the price went down to $98. My patience was rewarded because the dress is SO pretty in person! As colorful and vibrant as I hoped. The second dress below was a bit of a surprise - it's swim material (like an actual swim suit) so not sure if I'm keeping it yet. The maxi is a total score though, and hopefully a good lesson in spending more to get the items you really love!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Striped Hoodie

Don't mind me, I'm just hanging out in the backyard in my new striped hoodie! I am a happy camper because I've been searching for the perfect one for months. A striped hoodie is a great go-to for a road trip, beach weekend, or hanging around the house. I ordered this one online, and the fabric is really nice in person. Really soft and the perfect weight (a little fuzz but not too much). This is pretty much my ideal lounging look! Have a great weekend!

I could not figure out how to wear this shirt! I've been wearing loose tunic tops with skinny jeans for so long that I'm rusty on how to wear other shapes. It's cropped and fitted, so it needed high waist bottoms that hit the bottom of the shirt. Thankfully it was the perfect match when these pants arrived in the mail yesterday. You can wear the ruffle two ways, and I went with the more subdued option (bottom picture) since the pants have so much volume. These pants are not as flattering looking at them straight on (sneaky they don't show that on the model!) but they are comfortable, a great price and work-appropriate even though they are trendy. For me they are a definite keeper!
