The simplicity of this catalog photo caught my eye. She looks elegant and polished in a lightweight turtleneck, black trousers and simple black pumps. I had similar items in my closet, including a turtleneck that's approx. 8 years old. It's been sitting in a drawer for several years but I held onto it because 1. it still fit, 2. was in great shape, 3. was a simple, timeless style I knew I'd want to wear again someday. This kind of easy outfit is perfect for those days at work when you don't feel like getting creative and just want to throw something on!

Today I bring you a real life style scenario. One where your husband tells you he has a surprise for Valentine's Day. It's an outdoor activity and that's all he will disclose. I grabbed flat, practical shoes, a jacket over a t-shirt for layers, and a wool hat to keep me warm (and to conceal my hair - I skipped doing it that morning). It may not be super exciting but it was perfectly functional for a very fun day. My outfit was loosely inspired by Jennifer Aniston's look - I shared her photo for another outfit idea with a green military jacket!

ps. I wound up choosing this recent outfit for our dressy Valentine's dinner!

What I love about this outfit is the juxtaposition of different genres. The button front shirt and tweed skirt are conservative, and the leather jacket and over the knee boots are rock n' roll. It's one of my favorite tricks for creating an outfit - mixing two opposites together!

I love the meme that says "put on some gangsta rap and deal with it" and so today my saying for winter is "put on a plaid scarf and deal with it." When it's cold outside, just throw one of these puppies on over your sweater. It adds warmth, as well as an interesting pattern to your outfit. I've tried wearing them lots of ways and you really can't go wrong: draped over your shoulders, around the collar of your coat, or under a belt, like today's look. (One downside: from the back it's just a belt across your sweater, which can look a little funny.) How do you like wearing a plaid scarf?

Another day, another coat paired with a turtleneck. At least, that's how winter feels lately! When it's cold outside I can hardly think about style, I just want to be warm and cozy. This outfit is something I would throw on to run errands while we're in freezing temps here. Unlike some winter outfits where the coat covers the cute outfit underneath, the coat pretty much makes the outfit so you can leave it on wherever you go.

My Clothing Budget Update and 5 Year Review

Clothing budget

This is everything I bought with my clothing budget since my last budget post on December 5! It's an average of approx. 7 items and $215 per month. I did not wind up purchasing a lot of sale items during the after-Christmas sales like I predicted, and I also didn't wind up getting the "investment" items like I had planned. (Unfortunately jeans shopping and leather jacket shopping didn't go so hot.) Instead, it was a mix of items I love in a middle price range, from a wide variety of stores. For more details on budget posts, why I do them and what they include see my last budget post and check out "How to Set a Clothing Budget."

Clothing budget

Now that we're caught up on recent budget activities, here's a quick review of my entire 5 years worth of budget posts (archived in my How To tab). I recently looked through all the posts and it was really eye opening. I never planned to do a 5 year review, but now that I'm looking back I think it could be valuable for anyone to keep track of and learn from the clothes they buy. My observations:

  • The review left me feeling... guilty. I hate being wasteful more than anything. But there were many items that I did not wear "enough," and/or wouldn't wear again today. Lots of strikes. Too many. This shocked me - I hardly go a day without sporting something that's 3-5 years old. I thought (wrongly) that I still loved and wore every single thing I had ever bought. I do have a good amount old things but not nearly as many (% wise) as I thought.
  • The age of the item mattered. Is this an actual improvement in my shopping decisions over time, or will it always be the case that you love newer items in your closet more? From budget posts in 2011, I averaged only 1-2 things that I'd wear today. From budget posts in 2015, I liked a higher percentage but still not all of it. I set a clothing budget so that I’m only spending a set amount of money - but what I buy within that budget matters, too. For the sake of being frugal, for the sake of the environment, I want to be buying things I'll wear for 10-20 years. (Maybe that's asking too much from my clothes? What lifespan should we expect?)
  • I tried to find commonalities - what was it about the items I still wear and like? Solid colors did better than prints overall (but not always), and concert tees, special occasion dresses, and stripes fared well (but not always). Fabric was hugely important. Anything leather (purses, shoes, jacket), boucle or lace, was still loved, as well as any fabrics that held up well after washing. (I'm convinced they add something to clothes to make them look nice until you wash them. Companies do this with sheets, so it may actually be true.)

The biggest takeaway: I have more questions than answers. Sometimes I wish that fashion fit into formulas to make it easy to know what to wear and what to buy. I think it matters to be mindful of what we buy - to set a budget and to aim to not be wasteful within that budget. But I don't know that, at least for me, clothes shopping will ever be something that I master with ease. In so many ways fashion is an art, and it's messy. One thing I can count on - my love for studying that art, and for seeking out helpful tips for getting dressed and sharing them, will keep me curious. There's always so much more to be learned!

What are some clothes shopping "lessons" you've mastered? Or mishaps you've learned from?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Jeans Shopping

The thought of jeans shopping makes me want to crawl back into bed. One of my least favorite activities, but I've had "find really good jeans" on my to-do list for years (yes, years). I have a pair of bootcut Hudson's from 8-9 years ago that still look as good as they day I bought them, and that's the kind of success I've been hoping to repeat. So I stopped by Nordstrom and tried on 40 pairs of designer jeans recently. I narrowed it down to two pairs - one pair the wash was perfect but the pockets weren't in the right place, and the other the pockets were good but not the wash. I wondered if I was just being cheap and not wanting to spend $200 on jeans, but I asked myself this question: "Would you buy these jeans if they were $30?" Nope! So I left empty handed. They didn't have any Hudson's to try on at Nordstrom that day, so my next step was to order these online:

Hudson  /  Hudson

The fit was great, but I was expecting top quality for $200 a pop. The material felt thin and not necessarily something that would hold up for a decade, so I sent them back, disappointed. At the same time, I ordered the Express jeans I'm wearing in today's pictures. And guess what? A random, $37 pair of jeans I ordered on a whim were a thicker and nicer material. I think it would be easier to have absolutes in fashion. Such as, I once had a great pair of Hudson's so that trick must work again... but unfortunately it's not always the case. I've talked about being brand blind in the past - don't let the fancy jeans fool you into thinking they are great, and don't let the not fancy jeans not impress you. Ultimately it doesn't matter what the label says. So it's $37 jeans for the win... this time.

Sometimes it's the simple things in fashion that make the biggest impact. Like the gray turtleneck I'm wearing. It's nothing grand, but I have a feeling I'm going to wear it for years to come, and it was on only $19 in the after season sales. It makes an easy outfit when paired with old favorites like an ivory coat and a gray wool hat, inspired by today's catalog photo!

This outfit has been on repeat lately! I found the inspiration photo after the fact, but wanted to include it to show another interpretation. White jeans in winter?! Yes, yes, and more yes. When I lived in Boston so many moons ago, I used to wear outfits much like this one when there was a light dusting of snow. I think white can be a great neutral for winter. White jeans may not feel right paired with a hot pink top and sandals right now, but it does feel seasonally appropriate when paired with a heavy coat and boots. I'd love to hear how you wear it though - do you wear white jeans in winter?

Also - the yellow floral pattern in this latest Target collaboration caught my eye! A lot of items are already sold out online, so I headed to my local store yesterday to try some things on (pretty much everything was still in stock there). Quality was great in some cases - the items pictured were nice and the striped sweater and bow blouse were almost too heavy (for Florida at least). In other cases (leather jacket, army jacket, basic tee) I wasn't impressed with the quality. I didn't get anything this round, but I'm still so loving that gorgeous yellow print!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Two Ways

The inspiration photo sparked an idea to put this necklace and top together. I simply couldn't decide which direction I wanted to go with it though - for the office (above) or for weekend (below), so I did both! The two outfits wound up looking so different you hardly even notice what they have in common. I recommend this strategy for any of your work tops. Buy ones that you can also use on weekends and style casually! Which outfit is your favorite?

This isn't so much an outfit post as it is show and tell with a new gray leather jacket! (I threw on a t-shirt and jeans for the photos.) I wear my black leather jacket more than any other item in my closet, so I've been wanting to add a gray leather jacket as another option. When I spotted that this Michael Kors jacket was on super sale (down to $198 from $495), I decided to order it online. It's gorgeous in person; the leather is so soft it's almost suede. It's incredibly heavy and warm though - the thing must weigh 10 pounds! I can't imagine wearing it to run errands or even keeping it on during dinner due to the weight, so sadly I think it's going back. I highly recommend it for anyone in a colder climate though! And stay tuned later this week for a 5-year review of all my budget posts and what I've learned about making purchasing decisions like these. Would you keep this jacket?

I love this idea of wearing a winter white turtleneck and jeans with a brown purse and booties. The turtleneck is new - picked up during a quick run to the mall last week for only $15 (no coupon). I'm a huge fan of a sleeveless turtleneck like hers. They are great for layering (I ordered #3 below, on sale for $19), but a warmer sweater with sleeves is also perfect for the weather we've been having lately. Color Me ModCloth

Colorful. It’s the first word I think of when describing my own personal style. I crave color and I love playing around with different color combinations in my closet! So taking part in the Color Me ModCloth campaign was an easy “yes” – I already had several of these rainbow items waiting in my cart!

Today’s post features three outfits I put together using four items from ModCloth’s own brand: a mustard skirt with an off-shoulder rainbow stripe shirt, a silky pale blue striped dress with included yellow belt, and a pastel rainbow skirt (paired with my own blush top). All four items are available in XS-4X sizes and I would be remiss to pick a favorite because I love all three looks so much!

Which colorful outfit do you like the best?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Yellow

It was the accidental timing of acquiring both a yellow necklace and a yellow shirt around the same time that made me think of this outfit idea. This shirt's best quality is perhaps the ruffled sleeves, but for chilly weather I liked the idea of layering it under a green military jacket paired with bootcut jeans I've had for approximately 8 years. Truth be told, I think I may have finally outgrown these jeans (the rise is so low!) and I may also exchange this top for the ivory or black color. But the necklace combo is staying, more on that below!

You might be thinking... "hey that skirt is pretty short." Because I'm thinking that too! In hindsight I'd like this look better with a longer skirt, or at least some tights. (Coincidentally, a longer version of this skirt is on my wish list - I gathered some options below.) This outfit has a school girl vibe and it's a bit whimsical, but it's what initially drew me to the idea. I'm so completely guilty of wearing and re-wearing this same, basic combo: a white/ivory top and jeans with cognac and turquoise accents! It's easy to throw on and it's a combo I never tire of inventing and re-inventing.
